Job Purpose
The Assistant Librarian will support the School Librarian in the day-to-day running of the school library, helping to create a welcoming, organised and engaging environment that promotes reading, research and independent learning across the school.
This is an entry-level position and would be particularly well suited to a candidate with previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) who is looking to develop their career within a school library setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the School Librarian with the daily organisation and smooth running of the library.
- Assist students and staff in locating books, resources and other learning materials.
- Support the issuing, returning, shelving and organisation of library resources.
- Help maintain accurate library records and ensure resources are appropriately labelled and catalogued.
- Assist with creating attractive library displays and promoting new books, reading initiatives and school events.
- Support students during scheduled library lessons and independent study periods.
- Encourage a positive reading culture and help students develop confidence in using library resources.
- Assist with stock checks and identifying damaged, missing or outdated resources.
- Support school-wide literacy initiatives, book fairs, author visits and other library events.
- Ensure the library remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
Skills Description
Candidate Profile
- Previous experience as a TA, HLTA or in a similar school-based support role is highly desirable.
- A genuine interest in books, reading, literacy and supporting young people.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Confident working with students across different age groups.
- Basic IT skills and a willingness to learn library management systems.
- A positive, proactive and collaborative approach.
- No previous librarian experience is required; training and support will be provided.
