POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance Services- Custodial, the Assistant Manager, Custodial functions as part of the Maintenance Services Team and is involved in all aspects of Custodial Services. The Assistant Manager provides leadership and work direction to bargaining unit staff. The Assistant Manager is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of custodial services and security of district facilities. This position works collaboratively with staff to achieve, promote, and maintain all district facilities.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Completion of a post-secondary Certificate in Facilities Management, Business Management or related field or demonstrated combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of three to five years related experience, with at least two years supervision of custodial staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of custodial services, security checks and maintenance operations including industrial cleaning supplies, tools and protective equipment required to complete work safely (e.g. WHMIS) and dispose of biological waste.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, evaluate performance and to determine and carry out corrective/disciplinary action.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent action in the performance of all duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including the ability to resolve conflict.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the district and operations.
  • Strong computer skills and comprehensive skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • A valid BC driver’s license and vehicle
Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership to Custodians and guidance to district management with the objective of providing efficient and effective cleaning services, maintenance and security of district facilities in accordance with standards.
  • Supervises, and assigns the work of the bargaining unit staff in the preparation and delivery of cleaning services.
  • Liaise with Human Resources to ensure consistent interpretation of the collective agreement and Health & Safety to ensure compliance with WorksafeBC regulations.
  • Participates in the selection of staff; provides training and evaluates staff performance and carries out any necessary corrective disciplinary actions. May represent the district and provide support at the various steps of the collective agreement grievance procedures.
  • Conducts inspections of sites with bargaining unit staff; liaises with staff or Administration; assesses equipment and tools required to support staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Responds to emergencies and safety related issues as they arise.
  • Participates and/or leads in the development, design, adaptation of improved processes
  • Reviews and provides assistance with the ordering and acquisition of supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in the training of staff on cleaning methods and procedures, use and care of equipment, alarm systems, WHIMIS, and safe work practices.
  • Participates in committees as required and offers input in all matters concerning payroll services.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of established computer systems, procedures and best practices.
  • Performs related duties as required.
