Welcome to The Artisan’s Bench, a place where art meets function and handcrafted is the standard. We are looking for a part or full-time Assistant Manager to join our effort and belief in supporting artisan creativity and the importance of shopping locally. We are a small and dedicated team, success in this role requires an Assistant Manager with strong communication skills who thrives off collaboration. This Assistant Manager is the Sales and Events Lead and will be responsible for all elements related to front of house sales and events within a retail setting. This individual will work alongside a small team to ensure smooth daily operations by engaging with in-store customers to provide exemplary customer service to increase sales. In addition this Assistant Manager is responsible for creating and executing events that promote artists, bring visibility to the store and increase sales.
Sales Duties This position has the lead responsibility for working with customers and executing sales. Beyond providing exemplary customer service, and going above and beyond to work with customers on meeting their needs, this also includes the physical display and management of products in the store.
The following tasks are intended as a general description and are not intended in any way to limit other duties which may be assigned.
- Provide exemplary customer service in store, including but not limited to:
- Welcome customers, both in person and on the phone. We carry high end items and are known for providing exceptional customer service. You will be the primary contact for all walk-ins.
- Answer questions, educate and offer suggestions. Customers come to us for ideas, inspiration, and assistance making selections.
- Follow up with customers as needed, at times we need to look for additional options or customers need to obtain additional info (room sizing, color confirmation etc) before moving forward with a sale. It is your responsibility to keep this communication and relationship moving. This may also entail working with artists to iron out details/timelines on commission pieces.
- Complete sales using a computer point-of-sale system
- Wrap fragile and delicate items for shipping and carryout from store
- Assist Web Manager and customers with placing online orders as needed
- Support owner with sales of area rugs as needed
- Assist team with maintaining store appearance
- Visual merchandising and restocking, ensuring that product is rotated and displays switched up as needed to keep in-store appearance fresh and appealing.
- Create window displays that featured different artists and product and are seasonally appropriate and eye catching
- Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the shop, front and back of house
- Break down boxes and clear packing materials
Event Management This position has the responsibility for conceptualizing, creating and executing all elements of in-store events. This includes ensuring success from concept to creation and developing a detailed timeline of events throughout the year.
- Conceptualize event themes and create detailed timelines for the year. Event themes should resonate with our customer base and feature our various artists. There are also 5+ key community events in Brighton throughout the year. You will be responsible for creating ways to integrate and highlight Artisan’s Bench in these events.
- Coordinate and plan events.
- Work with the Artisan’s Bench team to utilize our resources to enhance event. Examples may include:
- Co-creating event themes with the Owner
- Working with Asst Manager of Inventory to ensure all related product is in stock, tagged and ready to go
- Collaborating with Web Manager to detail timeline for web and social advertisements, planning product features, etc
- Make sure you have adequate staff to cover event
- Coordinate all elements of events from the small to large. Oversee timelines, any tasks that need to be delegated and resource allocation. Each element holds a piece of the puzzle to the success of the overall event.
- Attend and manage events.
- Handle any last minute changes or unforeseen events.
- Greet and engage with the audience
- Introduce artist when necessary and make sure they have what they need for the event
- Make sure everything stays on track and that attendees and artist have a positive experience
- Accomplish goals of event which will always include sales
- At the completion of the event, gather feedback as appropriate to gauge learning lessons and success. Complete any follow up with artists and customers as needed.
Assistant to the Owner This staff member will act as an assistant to the owner and the position includes additional duties to execute tasks, vision and sales. There will be significant on the job training in various aspects of the business. Flexibility, attention to detail and eagerness to learn is a must. Examples of assistant duties may include but are not limited to:
- Work with customers making involved, ongoing purchases or custom pieces that require additional attention over an extended period of time
- Attend art fairs to look for new artists or product
- Meet with new/potential artists
- Work extended hours during holidays and events to ensure the job is completed
- Willing to be involved in various parts of the business
Additional Tasks This Assistant Manager will be expected to open and close the store as needed after a preliminary training period.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of retail customer service experience
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Highly detail oriented and extremely organized.
- Strong ability to multitask in a busy environment
- Flexibility, this can be a very fast paced environment and at times you will need to pivot what you are doing throughout the day
- Ability to work well independently but also comfortable taking direction
- Passion for art and handmade goods
- Extraordinary communication skills
- This position requires heavy lifting (30lbs plus) and the ability to go up and down stairs while carrying heavy loads several times a day
- Energetic and used to being on your feet
- Have the ability to handle area rugs up to 80lbs with a partner
