Description
The Assistant - Occupational Therapy under the supervision of clinical staff, assists in direct and indirect patient related activities as delegated. As an active member of the occupational therapy team, the Occupational Therapy Assistant supports clinical staff with administrative duties, equipment and resource preparation. The role holder is responsible for preparing materials and ensuring clinical areas are clean, safe and ready for patient care. This includes performing routine maintenance on clinical equipment, stock and equipment management and monitoring of OT wheelchair and minor equipment loans. KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES: Clinical/Administrative Maintains a safe, patient environment within departmental clinic/treatment rooms and spaces in line with infection control standards. This includes: organizing, cleaning, tidying all work areas reviewing equipment and stock available in clinical areas, replacing equipment and topping up stock as required for patient care Ensures equipment is clean and in safe working order for patient care. Assists with the preparation of patient spaces for therapy session, including equipment preparation. Transports supplies, equipment and other miscellaneous items as specified by the clinical team in compliance with relevant organizational policies. Escorts patients within the hospital as instructed and under supervision of clinical staff. Manages and operates unit or clinic based equipment (for which he/she has received training), in a safe and effective manner. Participates in scheduled maintenance and cleaning of equipment, reporting any equipment or safety concerns immediately, completing work orders for equipment repairs, as necessary. Assists with the procurement of new equipment and stock items under the supervision of the occupational therapist/clinical staff. Responsible for day to day management of the occupational therapy equipment loan pool: Responsible for organization of equipment, reporting of equipment failures, management of equipment loan log Keeps track of equipment returns and follows up with therapists where appropriate Issues and completes return of equipment under the supervision of therapist and provides ongoing education regarding the equipment loan process to current and new staff Assists with departmental clinical operations as required. Responsible for organization and storage of equipment (e.g. ADL equipment, therapy resources, toys etc.) and supplies (e.g. consumable items including splinting material, PPE etc.) within patient care areas and assigned equipment store rooms and stock rooms in collaboration with materials management staff and clinical staff. Liaises with other teams (e.g. warehouse team) to request required supplies and ensures adequate top up and store of stock in designated stock rooms. Provides administrative support for clinical activities including being involved in the development of patient material, along with printing and photocopying of patient handouts and forms (e.g. home program handouts, patient education leaflets, consent forms etc.), appointment scheduling support and other administrative duties as delegated by OT leadership and clinical team. Promotes a safe environment and safe patient care by embracing a safety culture and identifying areas of risk to Occupational Therapy Supervisor. Complies with policies for personal and patient safety and for the prevention of healthcare associated infections. Communicates effectively with patients, families and members of the health care team. Demonstrates an understanding and performs basic infection control procedures correctly, e.g. Hand hygiene Environmental Cleaning Isolation precautions Professional Practice Provides documented evidence of own performance and maintenance of skills with appropriate continuing professional development activities consistent with the position. Responsible for maintaining a Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) Continuing Professional Development Profile for licensure (Occupational Therapy Technician License). Responsible for maintaining up to date mandatory training requirements (e.g. BLS & AED, fire safety etc.) Participates in service activities that contribute to excellence in outcomes, a positive patient experience and a healthy professional environment. Contributes to the achievement of clinical quality outcome indicators and patient satisfaction. Participates in quality improvement activities linked to occupational therapy strategic priorities and professional practice model. Participates in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication and teamwork. Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times. Actively welcomes and where appropriate provides support and participates in orientation activities for new staff. Participates in a learning environment e.g. departmental meetings, journal club, in-service education etc.) Responsible for completing supervision agreements, readiness for supervision sessions and maintaining accurate supervision records. Notifies clinical senior in a timely manner of scheduled and non-scheduled staff absence, collaborating with appropriate colleagues to minimize disruption to service and patient care.
