The department of Municipal Relations is looking for an Assistant Planner to provide support to the Community Planning & Development Branch in the Winnipeg office.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be willing to attend public hearings and meetings outside of typical work hours approximately one to two times a month.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally within Manitoba as required
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which may require extensive hours of computer work with a monitor and keyboard.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Post-secondary education in Planning, Geography, or Resource Management with experience working in a planning office. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the field of planning.
  • Experience (gained through work and/or education) using land use plans and bylaws, and land use maps.
  • Effective written communication skills to present ideas clearly and concisely in graphic and written form.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff, clients and other government departments and agencies.
  • Ability to take initiative to identify issues and potential solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail to maintain a high degree of accuracy.

Desired:

  • Experience providing technical, criteria-based review and analysis of planning documents.

Duties:
The Assistant Planner supports the Branch’s activities and operations by providing technical and specialized assistance on processing and reviewing planning applications; coordinating and administering key land use planning programs; creating and maintaining various databases and records; conducting research and analyses; preparing reports for senior management; and the preparation/maintenance of procedure manuals and educational material. The position also supports GIS applications and related technology by providing technical support in preparing maps, consolidating development plan and zoning by law maps etc.
