Job Title: Assistant Principal Turners Falls High SchoolPosition Summary: The Assistant Principal provides leadership to the school community and assists the Principal of Secondary Education in all aspects of the educational program at Turners Falls High School. The Assistant Principal has primary responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the school, including student behavior and attendance. They also assist in the supervision and evaluation of all 912 staff, including teachers, instructional and administrative assistants, and other personnel assigned to the school. The Assistant Principal implements policies and directives that promote student success, accountability in all practices, and fiscal responsibility at both the school and district levels.
In the absence of the Principal, the Assistant Principal assumes all associated duties and responsibilities.Major Responsibilities: Educational LeadershipServes as a liaison with local agencies, service providers, and the courts to ensure open communication to meet the needs of all students.Acts in accordance with the ethical principles of the profession.Uses data (e.g., MCAS, accountability measures) to identify goals for improving student achievement and supports teachers in exploring and implementing effective instructional strategies.Communicates the school and district vision, goals, needs, and accomplishments to students, staff, families, and the community.Supports a healthy school climate focused on student learning and the development of a cohesive, respectful professional staff.Promotes ongoing communication with families, actively involving them in their children’s education.Collaborates with the Principal in advocating for productive change within the school and district.Promotes communication with feeder schools and supports effective transitions from middle to high school.School ManagementAnticipates and proactively addresses potentially difficult, negative, or volatile situations; promptly informs the Principal when such issues arise.Manages and coordinates the work of high school support staff.Attends and may chair high school Student Support Team meetings.Works closely with teachers experiencing classroom management challenges, providing coaching, support, and resources, including collaboration with the mentor teacher program.Prepares the annual state attendance report and other required reports related to student attendance and behavior.Oversees the annual revision of the student handbook, incorporating updates in laws and policies.Assists in the management of school facilities and services, including supervision of before- and after-school duties and participation in evening events.Assigns substitute teachers as needed.Maintains open, respectful, and effective communication with all staff.Assists in organizing school events such as awards assemblies and graduation.Collaborates with the guidance department and Principal to develop the master schedule, ensuring effective class sizes and course selection options.Coordinates secondary-level summer school programming.Professional DevelopmentModels continuous professional growth through scholarship, reflective practice, and leadership as a teacher of teachers.Applies knowledge of adult learning principles in the design and implementation of effective staff development and in-service education.Provides orientation for new substitute teachers.Conducts staff evaluations in alignment with the districts evaluation system and timelines, using the process as a tool for growth and accountability.Develops a personal professional development plan based on self-reflection and feedback.EquityServes as an advocate for equitable access to educational opportunities for all students.Promotes respect for all members of the school community and affirms individual and group differences, including but not limited to gender, language, race, sexual orientation, religion, and socioeconomic background.Fosters a school climate that addresses the individual needs of students in a diverse society and supports staff in building cultural competency.Identifies and addresses bias in instructional materials, assessments, school practices, and structures.Oversees the development and implementation of Section 504 Accommodation Plans.Collaborates with the Director of Pupil Services and other personnel to ensure appropriate instruction and support for students with disabilities.Other Responsibilities: The Assistant Principal performs additional duties as directed by the Principal of Secondary Education
