Position Description
The McGill University Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position as a Clinician-Scientist at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

Job Duties
The successful candidate will join the hepatology group which consists of 6 full-time academic hepatologists at the Royal Victoria Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre.

Our career path definitions specify typical ranges of time allotted to clinical work, teaching (clinical and didactic), research and administration.
As a Clinician-Scientist, the successful candidate will be expected to spend 50% of their time dedicated to research and develop and maintain an independent and productive research program. The research program is expected to attract external peer reviewed funding (e.g., Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de Recherche Québec—Santé). Internal startup funding, including a research stipend for protected research time and operating funds, may be available on a competitive basis to a suitable candidate.
Clinical responsibilities will include covering the Hepatology consult services, rounding on the liver transplantation service, outpatient general hepatology, care of patients with ascites, portal hypertension, hepatorenal syndrome, as well as on call duties.
The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of graduate students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree and must hold, or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
  • Have completed subspecialty training in Gastroenterology;
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Be certified by the Collège des Médecins du Québec;
  • Have completed a fellowship in Hepatology with preferable training in ascites, liver related renal disease and portal hypertension of at least 2 years duration;
  • Completing a Master’s in Science, Education or Administration or Quality is an asset (but not obligatory);
  • Have training and clinical experience in managing all aspects of liver disease including portal hypertension and liver transplantation Applicants should have a strong and demonstrable interest in patient care, teaching, and innovation;
  • Have a strong commitment to patient care and have clinical and teaching skills.
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
