POSITION SUMMARY:

SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Professor in English.
This is a full-time, probationary faculty appointment, starting August 18, 2025. This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, extension site, online, and/or hybrid assignments.
The selected candidate will participate in campus-wide events beginning the week of Monday, August 18, 2025. The assigned work year runs through spring graduation in May. The position will require an annual base teaching schedule of up to 30 contact hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s in English Literature OR Master’s in Composition and Rhetoric.
  • Exhibited skills working with diverse student populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • TESOL, ESL, or ELL Certification(s)
  • Demonstrated experience working with developmental reading and writing populations.
Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach a wide variety of English courses, specifically writing and reading courses. This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, extension site, online, and/or hybrid assignments.

The candidate will also:

  • Use and develop a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods to engage student interest and address a variety of learning styles.
  • Develop curriculum to integrate multicultural perspectives.
  • Integrate appropriate instructional technology into the classroom to enhance student learning.
  • Maintain accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reporting).
  • Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate.
  • Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and learning outcomes.
  • Share responsibility for the English Department functions.
  • Participate in the department schedule development process.
  • Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to: assessment, attending and engaging in department meetings, serving on institutional committees, and participating in shared governance committees and campus life activities.
  • Perform duties described in Board policy, the faculty collective bargaining contract, and as assigned at the Stone Ridge, Kingston, and/or other designated locations.
