Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Physics at the University of Guelph and Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics are inviting applications for a joint faculty position in theoretical physics at the Assistant Professor level. This is a tenure-track faculty position at Guelph, combined with an Associate Research Faculty position at Perimeter Institute. The start date for this appointment could be as early as 1 July 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.
The research focus of the successful applicant will be in theoretical gravitational-wave physics. We also welcome applications in other areas of gravitational physics including astrophysics, cosmology, and high energy physics. The successful candidate will have a PhD in physics (or closely related field), a strong record of accomplishments in research, and a strong commitment toward teaching and mentoring. This candidate will be expected to spend equal time at both institutions and will benefit from a reduction in teaching duties at Guelph, in addition to having access to resources and opportunities at both institutions. Perimeter Institute will provide 50% of the salary for a term of six years, as well as an additional stipend and funds for research and travel. After the completion of the six-year term and upon a positive review, Perimeter expects to offer the successful candidate a new Associate position with one day per week spent at Perimeter and the remaining time spent at Guelph.
The Department of Physics at the University of Guelph includes 17 faculty members, over 120 students in undergraduate programs, and more than 45 students in graduate programs (MSc and PhD). Our faculty members, students, and postdocs conduct research in diverse fields such as astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter and material physics, planetary exploration, physics education, and subatomic physics. We enjoy collaborations with many off-campus research institutions, including the Canadian Space Agency and NASA, Perimeter Institute, the Canadian Light Source, and TRIUMF. Visit www.physics.uoguelph.ca for more information.
Perimeter Institute is one of the largest theoretical physics institutes in the world and home to a community of more than 50 postdocs and close to 100 graduate students. Perimeter employs 26 full time faculty and 20 associate faculty jointly with Canadian Universities who spend significant time at Perimeter as well as many Distinguished Visiting Research Chairs and Visiting Fellows from around the world. Last year the institute hosted over 1800 visitors through its vibrant visitor and conference/workshop programs. Perimeter’s research efforts include Cosmology, Mathematical Physics, Particle Physics, Strong Gravity, Quantum Fields and Strings, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Information, and Quantum Matter.
