Description

ABOUT THE JOB:

At George Fox University, we place a high value on excellent teaching-both in person and online. Through George Fox Digital (GFD), our online course offerings serve an increasing number of students across the university. As part of our current expansion, we are introducing a new kind of academic position-one that is rare not only at our university but within higher education more broadly. We are seeking someone who brings deep disciplinary expertise and a high level of teaching and learning excellence, yet is also willing to take a non-traditional academic path to help us explore how AI-integrated academic programming can reach new audiences while remaining grounded in our Christian mission and the ideals of university education. We are not interested in scaling our offerings with AI at the expense of deep learning or our faith commitments-nor are we willing to ignore the powerful new possibilities AI offers for enhancing academic outcomes. We want both!
The position of Assistant Professor for AI Integration will be responsible for working with the Vice President of George Fox Digital to help adopt AI tools, foster relationships with technology vendors, learn how to use and deploy AI tools for teaching and learning, and test AI educational programming on students in digital environments. The GFD team is a growing and vibrant group committed to academic innovation, research, and collaboration across the university. We serve hundreds of students in our Accelerated Online Degree program and thousands of traditional undergraduate students through GFD/online versions of our Cornerstone general education programming, in addition to other video storytelling and thought leadership projects (such as the George Fox TALKS podcast). Our GFD work environment is warm and relational and our standards are high-requiring self-driven individuals to take hold of projects and drive them to all sorts of conclusions, to measure and assess progress and change accordingly, and to empower the university to fulfill its mission of preparing students spiritually, academically, and professionally.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR CANDIDATES WHO HAVE:

  • Areas of expertise we are seeking, at the terminal degree level (PhD, MFA, JD, etc.) or MA with strong commensurate experience, with strong teaching and learning emphasis: Open to any academic discipline, but especially inviting: Writing, Language, and Literature; History; Arts; Humanities; any science or technology related field also considered.
  • Strong understanding of AI language tools and their educational potential. We are not looking for someone with coding or engineering experience, but rather seek someone with strong academic background who has: familiarity with generative AI tools (e.g., Gemini and other Google products, ChaGPT, Claude, Perplexity) and their educational potential and limitations; demonstrated experimentation with AI in a learning and research context; a strong understanding of current discourse around AI use in academia and the academic integrity debate as it concerns AI; experience translating emerging technologies into actionable academic content; and the ability to grow and learn rapidly, learn new tools, and master unfamiliar technologies.
  • Online teaching and course design experience.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain active and timely communication during the workweek with members in project teams and with students in course instruction.
  • Experience and knowledge working with a diverse student demographic.
  • Understanding of disability and accessibility issues; commitment to providing all students with equitable access to course materials.
  • Willingness to occasionally work on nights and weekends as course rhythms require.
  • A personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a church. In addition, employees agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.
