Summary
The Department of English & Foreign Languages at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida invites applications for a full-time, continuing track position of Assistant Professor of English to contribute to the First-Year Writing Program and Professional Writing Specialization.
Housed in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of English and Foreign Languages offers bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish. Our recently revised English major offers students the opportunity to specialize in literature or professional writing. The First-Year Writing Program includes a two-semester sequence of first-year writing as well as a basic writing course and a first-year writing studio that follows the Accelerated Learning Program model.

We seek an energetic colleague interested in teaching in a multicultural community dedicated to collaborative social engagement.
This full-time Assistant Professor of English will contribute to a vibrant and robust First-Year Writing Program through teaching and programmatic and curricular development. Teaching opportunities in the Professional Writing specialization include courses in Writing for the Internet and Professional Editing; we also welcome candidates interested in developing new courses that complement existing offerings.
Candidates must have a strong background in composition pedagogy and demonstrate a commitment to teaching first-year writing and serving diverse student learners.
Secondary specializations may include, but are not limited to, digital media composition, professional and technical writing, multilingual literacies, and generative AI.

Essential Functions

  • Teach 9 credits per semester (3/3) in the First-Year Writing Program and Professional Writing specialization.
  • Contribute to departmental, college, university, community, and professional service. Departmental service will include membership on the First-Year Writing Curriculum and Assessment Committee.
  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students in the English program and undecided majors.
  • Engage in sustained scholarship.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, or closely related field is required by date of hire.
  • Candidates must demonstrate evidence of successful college-level teaching, especially in First-Year Writing, and have a research agenda in rhetoric and writing studies.
