ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF FINE ARTS – DRAWING + PAINTING

Laguna College of Art + Design is seeking a full-time experienced Assistant Professor of Fine Arts – Drawing + Painting. The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Art, Illustration, and Entertainment Design.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Professor of Fine Arts – Drawing + Painting teaches 18 units per academic year, assists with professional and student exhibits, and assists with the Community Education program. Other duties include curriculum development, participation in developing departmental procedures, student advisement, involvement in student outcome assessment, and committee service at the department and college levels. The Assistant Professor of Fine Arts – Drawing + Painting is expected to continue scholarly and professional activities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION:

EDUCATION

Master’s degree (MFA or MA in Studio Art) or commensurate education and experience preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Administrative supervisory experience preferred.
  • 5 or more years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Record of successful professional studio practice (exhibition, juried shows, etc.) and membership in professional organizations related to field of expertise.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Intermediate skill level for Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Intermediate skill level for Google Suite: Gmail and Calendar (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of one or more of the following studio art subjects: painting, drawing, and/or printmaking, as demonstrated with portfolio of work.
  • Proficiency in delivery of instructional materials.
  • Proficiency with student project assessment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Must be student-centered with a demonstrated commitment to providing instruction in a richly diverse and multicultural campus environment.
  • Must be self-motivated, focused, and proactive, and have a positive attitude.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, students, and the public required.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations with tact, diplomacy, and discretion required.

  • Must be able to drive personal vehicle for business purposes and must pass DMV background check and have minimum insurance requirements as set by LCAD.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches a full course load of 18 units per year (lower and upper-level undergraduate classes in the drawing and painting and foundations program).
  • Maintains regular on-campus office hours.
  • Remains current in the discipline and updates course content when appropriate to reflect evolving levels of student knowledge.
  • Instructs, manages, and supervises students in classrooms through demonstrations, discussions, visual aids, field trips, individualized instruction, and lectures.
  • Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study based on learning outcomes.
  • Works in partnership with the Fine Arts Chair through a formal system of evaluation of instruction to identify strengths and weaknesses and identify professional development activities to improve student learning.
  • Attends faculty senate meetings; serves on committees as assigned.
  • Assists students in academic advising including course scheduling.
  • Assists department advisers, Fine Arts Chair, and other faculty in maintaining an exceptional fine art program with a positive learning environment.
  • Participates in Admissions recruitment events such as portfolio days, student registration, LCAD Open House, new student events, and assists with transcript/portfolio evaluation of transfer students.
  • Helps create connections with other LCAD majors and other schools.
  • Assists the Fine Arts Chair with the development of community education classes and faculty placement.
  • Works with the Fine Arts Chair and faculty in the development of departmental policies, curriculum content, instructional standards, and evaluation methods.
  • Participates in student assessment, including Advancement Review.
  • Assists the Fine Arts Chair with curating annual gallery exhibitions.
  • Coordinates the BFA Senior Show in May at the LCAD Gallery.
  • Demonstrates a record of ongoing research, scholarships, or creative activities appropriate to the painting and drawing discipline.
