The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.
It is a strategic objective of the University to strengthen diversity in academia and to attract and retain talented women. To reinforce this commitment, the present position is being advertised as part of the University of Luxembourg’s Anne Beffort Excellence Programme, which prioritizes the recruitment of female scholars to professorial roles. For an initial period of six months, the University will consider applications exclusively from female candidates.
Founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg is a young research-intensive institution. Interdisciplinarity in research and teaching is key to the University’s approach to addressing tomorrow’s societal challenges. Embedded in Luxembourg’s diverse and multicultural society, the University offers a welcoming, multilingual environment where students and researchers from around the world feel at home. Its human size fosters close interaction between students and lecturers, creating a personal atmosphere. With 1,600 members of academic staff for 6,700+ students and 1,000+ PhD candidates, students feel connected and valued on their academic journey.
Internationally recognised research drives innovation in digital transformation, health, and sustainable development. This scientific progress is supported by cutting-edge infrastructure and a national commitment to education, research, and innovation. The dynamics of a young university offer rare potential and scope for exploring new ideas.
The Department of Engineering (DoE) is interdisciplinary and active in the classical domains of civil, electrical, mechanical, and computational engineering. The focus of research is on the development of technological solutions, the sustainable and economical use of all kinds of resources, the offer of competences for the technological requirements of Luxembourg and the Greater Region industrial and public actors. Special emphasis is given to numerical simulation to reduce the required experimental effort, but the validation of the models on laboratory setup will remain an essential asset. The Department of Engineering (DoE) headed by Prof. Dr. Francesco Viti (francesco.viti@uni.lu), is opening an Assistant / Associate Professor (depending on qualifications) position in Electrical Power Quality.
About the Anne Beffort Excellence Programme:
The University of Luxembourg is committed to fostering a diverse academic community, recognizing that diversity drives excellence in education and research. The University has a number of family-friendly and inclusion policies and initiatives, including the Advance Mentoring Programme, UMatter, the Marie Speyer Excellence grants, flexitime, parental leave & partial support for childcare costs for conferences.
To further support this vision, the University has launched the Anne Beffort Excellence Programme in 2024, to promote gender balance in professorial positions. This programme prioritizes the recruitment of women, in line with the University’s broader efforts to promote research excellence in a gender diverse environment.
Anne Beffort positions are professorial appointments offering a range of benefits, including:
The role involves establishing a research group focused on secure energy transmission and electrical power quality. Addressing these fields requires a forward-looking vision where digital technologies and dependable grids are integrated. The application of machine learning and data analytics to innovative electrical power quality technologies and to reliable and efficient energy transmission supports the development of dependable grids and sustainable energy solutions, aligning with contemporary demands for robust and secure energy systems. The candidate will actively seek cooperation with researchers from within the Department, but also with researchers from other departments, faculties, and interdisciplinary centres, or external Luxembourgish research institutions.
The ideal candidate will establish a globally recognized research program showcasing expertise in domains such as:
The selected candidate will contribute to the teaching missions, the supervision of theses and (post) doctoral training. They should be open to interdisciplinary collaborations with both academic and industrial partners.
