Description

Van Andel Institute (VAI), a world-class biomedical research institute, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is dedicated to improving human health. We are pioneers in the fight against cancer, Parkinson’s, and other diseases. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and educators.
The Hoyer Lab is seeking a Research Technician to be a key part of our research team. The research in the laboratory investigates the cell biology of neurons and other cell types of the brain, including how specialized pathways remove damaged or superfluous organelles. We engineer stem cells that can be converted to different nervous system cell types. We incorporate different quality control sensors or use CRISPR/Cas9 to create disease related deletions or genetic variants. The lab employs fluorescence microscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, flow cytometry, proteomics, and other biochemical techniques, in order to understand mechanisms that promote health and prevent neurodegenerative diseases.

In this role, you will be provided training for the following responsibilities:

  • Maintaining and handling stem cell cultures
  • Molecular and cell biology techniques (i.e. plasmid cloning, Western blots, flow cytometry)
  • Preparing protein samples for mass spectrometry
  • CRISPR/Cas9 editing
  • Assisting with general laboratory maintenance
  • Detailed record keeping and adherence to protocols

Successful candidates for this position will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Cell/Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related biomedical fields
  • At least one (1) year of wet lab bench experience is preferred, but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and patience
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as an active member of an integrated team
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Written and oral communication skills
