POSITION OVERVIEW

Position title: Assistant Researcher
Salary range: $93,400 -$110,400 The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 13B- Represented Professional Research Series- FY. The salary range for this position is $93,400 -$110,400. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for a position of Assistant Researcher whose research will focus on carbon cycle studies using atmospheric inverse modeling systems. The research includes the following activities:

  • Developing multi-trace gas (CO2, CO, etc.) inversion framework to improve estimates of carbon fluxes
  • Enhancing carbon flux estimates by assimilating satellite-derived CO2 and CO observations within global and regional inversion systems
  • Characterizing transport errors and reducing their impact on carbon flux estimates from inversion
  • By using satellite-based carbon flux estimates, investigating the regional to global response of carbon dynamics to extreme climate events
  • Presenting research findings at scientific conferences and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

  • A PhD in Atmospheric Science, Bio-geoscience, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with data assimilation techniques and atmospheric transport modeling
  • Strong knowledge and expertise in carbon cycle and climate-carbon interactions
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at major international scientific meetings and conferences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
