Maxwell Alley, Jersey City’s newest addition to full-service fine dining, is seeking an assistant sommelier to join its front-of-house team. Maxwell Alley is a contemporary American restaurant, blending farm-to-table freshness with exotic global flavors. Everything, from breads and pastas, sauces and marinades, pastries and desserts, is made in-house. We have an innovative bar program of unique cocktails and an eclectic wine list focusing on boutique/craft winemakers from all over the globe, including lesser-known Old and New World winemaking regions. The list leans natural, funky and creative, but contains many classic wines from iconic regions as well. The wine list includes 20 wines by the glass and a bottle list of approximately 150 bottles.
The position is part-time hourly and carries significant responsibility for the restaurant’s extensive and ambitious wine program. Duties include floor service during busy dinner shifts and event nights – between 2 and 4 shifts per week, supporting guests with their wine selections and providing tableside wine service. Guest support also includes pre-visit consultation with guests who request such service when booking their reservations. For on-site wine events, duties include set-up and in-service support, post-event sale of featured bottles, as well as potential support of promotion (ticket sales).
Additional duties include the management of wine inventory, placing of weekly replenishment orders, updating of wine lists/menus, staff training and collaboration with company-wide wine team for on-going curation of wine list – approximately 10 hrs/week for cellar/admin work. Pay ranges from $15/hr+tips for floor to $25 an hour for cellar/admin.
Training will be provided; however, at least 1 year of hospitality/restaurant experience and basic wine knowledge are required. WSET and/or Sommelier program certification is a plus.
