This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Senior Aquatic Director, the Assistant Swim Coach is responsible for a high-quality, competitive swim program that aligns with both YMCA core values and USA Swimming standards. This role is dedicated to fostering a positive team culture, enhancing swimmer performance through technically sound training, and supporting the development of athletes at all levels to achieve their fullest potential in and out of the pool. in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Bloomington-Normal YMCA is seeking an energetic, motivated, and committed Assistant Swim Coach to help develop and inspire our competitive swim team. The ideal candidate will be USA Swimming affiliated and passionate about fostering an environment that builds strong swimmers, confident athletes, and well-rounded individuals in line with YMCA values.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Active USA Swimming Coach Membership in good standing (or ability to obtain prior to start).
  • Required: Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches (STSC).
  • Experience coaching or teaching swimming, preferably in a competitive environment.
  • Strong understanding of stroke technique, training principles, and race strategies.
  • Ability to motivate and connect with athletes of all ages.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Must pass a background check and meet all YMCA and USA Swimming safeguarding requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting all practices, workouts, and team activities in accordance with USA Swimming and YMCA guidelines.
  • Support the development of swimmers of all ages and skill levels, focusing on stroke technique, endurance, and race preparation.
  • Attend and coach at all scheduled swim meets, practices, and team functions as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and encouraging environment for all athletes.
  • Assist in tracking swimmer progress and communicating with athletes and parents.
  • Support team administration tasks such as meet entries, travel planning, and equipment management.
  • Serve as a role model for swimmers by demonstrating good sportsmanship, leadership, and the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
