POSITION SUMMARY

The Office of the Dean in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) member at the rank of Assistant Lecturer. Experiential Learning, an emerging focus for the Faculty of Engineering, includes four sub-categories: Land-based, Research-based, Innovative & Strategic, and Work-Integrated learning. These initiatives empower students to develop into well-rounded engineers—mind, body, and spirit—ensuring they graduate with not only future-ready skills but also to make a meaningful impact within communities. Experiential learning is a crucial part of engineering education, and students in the Faculty have access to a wide range of opportunities through the support of student organizations, faculty members, staff, industry and community partners.
The successful candidate will contribute to the Faculty of Engineering by providing instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum development, and engaging in Faculty and community service. This role involves teaching credit courses, mentoring students in engineering design, and demonstrating how engineering work can support underserved communities.
The successful candidate will have an anticipated term of JANUARY 1, 2026 to JUNE 30, 2028.

ACADEMIC AND/OR PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and PhD in Engineering or a closely related field
  • Must be licensed or be eligible to be licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Alberta
  • Experience teaching for-credit design courses at post-secondary institutions, such as engineering design, design thinking, and universal design
  • Experience with Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) in post-secondary institutions
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and curriculum design, including experience with course or program development
  • Experience teaching design, capstone projects, experiential and community-based courses
  • Experience with course delivery to undergraduate students in a variety of modalities, including and not limited to in-person, online, synchronous, asynchronous, experiential learning, community-based, and traditional or flipped classrooms
  • Experience leading experiential and community-based learning programs in engineering at post-secondary institutions, including and not limited to collaborating with professionals on grants and industry partnerships/ sponsorships, program coordination, and delivery
  • Ability to use Universal Design for Learning principles to make informed and equitable choices to remove barriers and enable equitable learning for students
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching, leadership, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing student engagement and assessment strategies
  • Experience in the application of equity, diversity, and inclusivity to learning and educational contexts
  • Knowledge of and experience with Indigenous ways of knowing, decolonization, Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action in adult learning and/or post-secondary programs
  • Critical thinking and organizational ability
  • Facilitation, negotiation and problem-solving skills as well as an ability to handle challenging situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt and collaborate with colleagues
  • Technically proficient in the computer environment and has a working knowledge of various applications to deliver teaching materials
