JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for underwriting a complex book of Motor business, employing the methods necessary to meet projected GWP, profitability, and expense goals, implementing proper underwriting disciplines/guidelines, marketing and servicing of existing and potential clients. Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, rating rules and models.
Provide technical guidance, assistance and training to junior associates.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENT

  • At least 10 years of Motor Underwriting experience in Singapore.
  • Wide range of knowledge regarding the various types of vehicles, associated risks and related insurance products.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work, and effectively resolve conflict among priorities.
  • Ability to develop solutions to problems and evaluate courses of action and reach logical conclusions.
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical skills with a high level of proficiency in the use MS Office Suite (especially MS Excel including pivot tables and lookup functions).
  • Strong communication, marketing, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, and ability to interface with employees and management at various levels.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism, integrity and trust.
Responsibilities
  • Leading the development and agreement of strategies for one or more allocated portfolios of risks, agreeing associated risk appetite, underwriting philosophies and pricing strategies, in order to achieve the agreed business strategies and targets.
  • Managing the performance of allocated portfolios through compliance controls, accumulation and performance monitoring, cycle management and portfolio forecasting to ensure agreed targets and standards are met.
  • Ensuring the long-term development of allocated portfolios through the management of product development, based on portfolio performance, market intelligence, R&D insight, legal developments and emerging risks.
  • Liaising with Reinsurers and/or internal Reinsurance teams to achieve the desired levels of cover on appropriate commercial terms and/or exploit appropriate reinsurer capacity, data and expertise to maximise profitable portfolio growth.
  • Contributing actively to the development of segment and local customer propositions, and associated sales planning and account development, bringing knowledge and insights of the market and its risks, proactively identifying opportunities to increase penetration of existing customers and/or expand the business mix.
  • Reviewing non-standard case referrals and delivering underwriting decisions, following agreed processes at the designated authority level, in order to secure profitable business within the agreed risk appetite.
  • Providing expert advice, guidance and coaching to colleagues to address technical referrals, and raise standards and expertise across the technical underwriting community.
  • Recruiting, managing, coaching, developing and motivating the team to ensure delivery of the required standards of performance now and in the future.
  • Leading and/or contributing to technical audits and peer review processes as required to support and enable the maintenance of an effective control environment.
  • Ensuring that internal systems and processes are in place and working effectively to support business needs.
  • Taking on additional responsibilities as required.
