Title: Assistant Vice President Controller
Date: September 2025
FLSA Status: Exempt – Full time, 12-month position
Reports to: Vice President for Finance and Administration
Job Summary: The Assistant Vice President Controller is responsible for overseeing the colleges accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and external audits. This role ensures the integrity of financial systems and records, supports budget implementation and monitoring, and prepares financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The AVP Controller also supervises the Business Office, including payroll, accounts payable, and general accounting functions, and assists the Vice President for Finance and Administration with financial planning and policy development.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Accounting, with preference given to CPA certification and/or MBA.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in accounting; should have served three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Thorough knowledge of and expertise with the principles, practices, and techniques of non-profit fund accounting and budgeting.
  • Proficiency with accounting software applications and above average Excel user. Experience with Jenzabar J1 and PowerBI would be valuable.
  • Ability to develop, implement, maintain, and monitor computerized systems.
  • Must be able to understand, interpret, and implement policies and procedures.
  • Skilled at hiring, supervising, and developing staff members.
  • Establish priorities, work independently, and accomplish objectives in a timely manner.

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and faculty

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the staff accountant, accounting and payroll manager, and accounting support specialist.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliation and related journal entries.
  • Review and post monthly journal entries and maintain the general ledger.
  • Review other financial information used in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Maintain the college endowment unitization through the endowment management software Fundriver.
  • Monitor the internal control structure, improving as necessary, and ensure compliance throughout the college.
  • Coordinate the annual financial and retirement audits, along with associated returns.
  • Review and monitor actual performance versus the budget.
  • Forecast revenues, expenditures, and year-end balances.
  • Assist in the development of special reports for use by the Presidents Council, Board of Trustees, and leadership of P.E.O. International.
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned for the effective operation of the college.
