JOB SUMMARY:

Assists in the performance of work connected with the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of water sources, storages, distribution systems equipment and auxiliary equipment; and performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and

  • one (1) year of work experience under a skilled mechanic in electrical or mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment in a pumping plant, engine room, power plant or water/wastewater plant, or related industrial-type equipment.

Tests:

Applicants will be required to qualify on a written examination.

  • Please note exams are held ONLY on Kaua’i. We do NOT conduct testing in other jurisdictions.
  • When attending the written examination, please be prompt. There will be no admittance if you are late.
  • The written examination will take place on October 1st, 2025.
Responsibilities

Examples of Duties: ( The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position ).

  • Assists in the operation, maintenance, replacement, and repair of equipment at the deep-well and booster pumping stations, water treatment facilities, control valve stations, storage tanks and water source facilities to provide continuous potable water supply in compliance with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act;
  • As directed, learns to operate the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system from remote facilities or personal computer;
  • Assists in reading, maintaining records and analyzing all appurtenant monitoring parameters obtained from meters, recorders, instruments, operator interface terminals (OIT) and personal computers for such values as flows, pressures, voltages, amperages, power factors, hour meters, water levels, chlorine cylinder weights, chemical feed rates, residual values, vibrations, turbidity values and other parameters;
  • Assists with monitoring, maintaining, repairing, replacing, and adjusting chemical equipment for assurances of proper feed dosages including the timely replacement of chemical supplies for compliance with all drinking water rules and regulations;
  • Assists with repair, maintenance, modification, overhaul, and adjustments to hydraulically, pneumatically, and electrically operated control valves, air relief valves, combination air and vacuum relief valves;
  • Manually operates valves with valve key or hand wheel operator and associated piping;
  • May assist in response to emergencies to trouble shoot and repair/replace malfunctioning equipment and components and performs security related duties, monitoring malevolent acts;
  • May perform routine maintenance and repair work on water facilities;
  • Assists with maintenance of records of repairs, service and maintenance schedules, spare parts inventory, and other records
  • May operate a motor vehicle;
  • May investigate and remedy customer complaints; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
