Position Title: Assistant Water Treatment Plant Operator (Class 2)
Location: Lynn Lake, Manitoba
Department: Public Works
Employment Type: 20-40 hours per week
Reports To: Water Treatment Plant Operator

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Assistant Water Treatment Plant Operator (Class 2) is responsible for supporting the efficient operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the water treatment facility to ensure the safe production and distribution of potable water. The successful candidate will assist in compliance with all regulatory requirements, operational standards, and safety protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certification:
  • Valid Class 2 Water Treatment Operator Certification (Manitoba) or equivalent recognized by the Manitoba Water and Wastewater Association (MWWA).
  • Valid Class 2 Water Distribution Certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in water treatment plant operations, including monitoring and maintenance.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of water treatment principles, equipment, and chemical dosing systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable provincial and federal regulations governing potable water production.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and operational issues effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer applications related to plant operations, including SCADA systems.
  • Other Requirements:

o Grade 12, G.E.D., or Mature High School Diploma

  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license
  • Physically capable of performing duties, including lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing, and working in confined spaces
  • Availability for on-call and emergency response duties, including evenings and weekends

Responsibilities
  • Operations & Maintenance:
  • Operate and monitor water treatment systems, including pumps, filters, and chemical dosing equipment.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on plant equipment and systems.
  • Collect water samples and conduct water quality tests, such as pH, turbidity, and chlorine residual measurements, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Adjust treatment processes as needed based on monitoring data and laboratory results.
  • Compliance & Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of daily operations, maintenance activities, and water quality data.
  • Assist with the preparation of regulatory reports as required by provincial and federal agencies.
  • Respond promptly to alarms and operational issues to minimize service interruptions.
  • Safety & Training:
  • Follow all workplace health and safety guidelines, including proper handling of chemicals and operation of equipment.
  • Participate in training sessions to maintain certification and enhance knowledge of water treatment processes.
  • Support emergency response efforts in case of water system failures or contamination events.
  • Team Support:
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Operator and other staff to achieve operational goals.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff, if applicable.
