EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Senior academic leadership experience at the level of department chair, research director, associate dean, medical director, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated success in securing and managing extramural research funding
  • Experience mentoring faculty and students in scholarly activities
  • Deep commitment to and alignment with BYU’s academic mission and the doctrine and values of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of administrative leadership in academic research or medical education
  • Experience managing clinical, translational, or population health research programs
  • Familiarity with federal research regulations and compliance systems
  • Knowledge of institutional review boards (IRBs), data security, and research ethics
  • Proven capacity to foster collaboration and interdisciplinary research partnerships
  • Experience with research-related accreditation elements (e.g., LCME, ACGME)
Responsibilities

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

The Associate Dean of Research (AD-R) at the Brigham Young University (BYU) School of Medicine (SoM) is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the Dean. The AD-R provides strategic leadership and oversight of the SoM’s research enterprise, including development of research infrastructure, support for faculty and student scholarship, collaboration with clinical research partners (e.g., Intermountain Health), oversight of research functions within global health field sites, and integration of research training into the undergraduate medical education (UME) program.
The AD-R leads the implementation of the SoM’s current and future strategic research initiatives and aligns those efforts with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Humanitarian Services efforts.
The AD-R ensures all research activities reflect BYU’s mission and the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and collaborates closely with university offices, affiliated clinical partners, and international research networks.

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

Research Strategy and Infrastructure

  • Lead the development and implementation of SoM’s strategic research initiatives
  • Build infrastructure to support research administration, compliance, and data systems
  • Promote sustainable, mission-aligned research growth across departments and clinical affiliates
  • Oversee research policies, space planning, equipment allocation, and budget

Faculty and Student Research Development

  • Mentor faculty in research design, grant writing, and scholarly dissemination
  • Collaborate with department chairs to build research capacity and productivity
  • Guide the development of research mentorship programs and peer review processes
  • Align faculty and student research opportunities with strategic initiatives

UME Research Integration

  • Develop research components within the undergraduate medical education (UME) program
  • Oversee student research pathways, scholarly concentrations, and capstone projects
  • Ensure research experiences support core competencies and educational outcomes
  • Facilitate faculty-student research alignment and support structures for mentorship

Grants, Funding, and Compliance

  • Promote extramural funding through faculty development and grant support
  • Support applications to NIH, foundations, and private funders aligned with the SoM mission
  • Ensure research pre- and post award compliance with university, state, and federal regulations
  • Oversee relationships with BYU’s Research Administration, IRB, and Sponsored Projects offices

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Foster interdisciplinary research collaborations within BYU and with external partners
  • Serve as the liaison to Intermountain Health and other clinical affiliates on research initiatives
  • Works closely to align research with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Services’ needs and efforts.
  • Represent the SoM in national and international research networks and consortia
  • Serve as a member of the BYU University Research Council

Institutional and Strategic Engagement

  • Participate in the Dean’s Executive Leadership Team and school-wide strategic planning
  • Provide regular reporting on research metrics, goals, and progress
  • Promote a research culture rooted in spiritual purpose, integrity, and covenant belonging
