The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Assistant / Associate / Professor of Medical Education, Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine [R0147351]
ROLE of the POSITION
The Academic Affairs division of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine is comprised of three components; Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, and Continuing Medical Education. Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) is comprised of three curricular phases: (1) foundations, (2) clerkships, and (3) career exploration and scholarship leading to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Reporting to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Education, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education is responsible for all aspects of the MD curriculum. The Associate Dean serves as a member of the senior leadership team and supports all aspects of the Office of Academic Affairs and Education.
The Associate Dean supports the Vice Dean in strategic planning, budget management, human resource management, compliance, facilities management, and IT management for the undergraduate medical education program. The Associate Dean is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the MD curriculum to ensure continuous quality improvement and compliance with the accreditation standards of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education. The Associate Dean supports the Vice Dean in acquiring adequate educational resources for the MD program, including faculty, staff, facilities, and community partners.
This role provides leadership, strategic planning, and management of the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education while fostering continual improvement and innovation. This position supervises the Assistant Dean for Biomedical Science Education and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education. The Associate Dean works with the Curriculum Oversight Committee, and the Medical Student Progress Committee.
The Associate Dean liaises with other offices and departments in the School of Medicine and the University, including the Dean’s Office, Admissions, Recruitment, and Student Financial Assistance, Student Affairs and Career Services, Academic Support Services, Medical Education, Community Engagement, Well-Being and Integrative Medicine, Graduate Medical Education, and Continuing Medical Education. The Associate Dean also liaises with clinical affiliates and community partners. The Associate Dean represents the School of Medicine at local, state, and national levels.

Senior Leadership

  • Serves as a member of the senior leadership team and supports all aspects of the Office of Academic Affairs and Education.
  • Supports the Vice Dean in strategic planning, budget management, human resource management, compliance, facilities management, and IT management for the undergraduate medical education program.
  • Works collaboratively with other academic deans to improve educational programs, student experience, and the learning environment at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine

Undergraduate Medical Education

  • Supports the Vice Dean in acquiring adequate educational resources for the MD program, including faculty, staff, facilities, and community partners.
  • Supervises the Assistant Dean for Biomedical Science Education and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education.
  • Works with the Curriculum Oversight Committee, and the Medical Student Progress Committee
  • Oversees and directs the educational content of the MD curriculum
  • Supervises and provides leadership to the faculty who teach in the MD curriculum
  • Plans, alters, and directs course and curricular schedules for the MD program
  • Supports faculty development, especially in the areas of teaching and learning
  • Has the authority, responsibility, and discretion to appoint or remove course leadership and teaching faculty
  • Provides oversight of assessment strategies of medical students in all phases of the MD program
  • Works on budget and staffing for undergraduate medical education

Continuous Quality Improvement and Accreditation

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates the MD curriculum to ensure continuous quality improvement and compliance with the accreditation standards of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education.

Ideal candidates are expected to:

  • Teach in one or more of the following disciplines: foundational medical sciences, foundational clinical practice, problem based learning, or other content provided during the three phases of the curriculum.
  • Engage in scholarly activity. Scholarship may include the candidate’s primary discipline, medical education, or both domains.
  • Provide supervision and evaluation of medical student performance.
  • Actively participate in ongoing curriculum development and continuous quality improvement.
  • Work collaboratively to longitudinally integrate basic science, anatomical studies, and clinical skills with clinical learning objectives.
  • Adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Serve on departmental and institutional committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires and MD or Ph.D. from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and three (3) to five (5) years of experience in medical education with at least 3 years of experience in a leadership role such as course director, clerkship director, or assistant/associate dean.
The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV Faculty Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (FAPT) Committee will use the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV (SOM) promotion criteria to recommend rank to the Dean of the School of Medicine. Tenure consideration may be given upon hire on a case by case basis depending on verified previous credentials, the FAPT recommendation, and School of Medicine Dean’s recommendation.
