Position Summary
The Associate Director, Competitive Intelligence (CI) role leads all aspects of a comprehensive CI program based on an internal consultative engagement with ~5-7 key stakeholders to strategically support BMS’ portfolio. Delivers timely, relevant and strategic insights through effective communication of intelligence, manages external CI vendors/partners, and leverages relevant internal tools and platforms (including genAI tools). This position reports to the Executive Director, Competitive Intelligence and works closely with the therapeutic Competitive Intelligence lead for Cell Therapy who will provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and guidance.
This position resides within the Applied Intelligence and Analytics (AI&A) team within the broader Business Insights and Technology organization. AI&A helps BMS navigate uncertainty with data-driven and innovative analytical and insight solutions, serving as a trusted and objective strategic partner for our stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

  • The Associate Director (AD) will be responsible for executing the comprehensive competitive intelligence (CI) strategic plan for select areas within BMS’ cell therapy portfolio. This role requires alignment with stakeholder priorities and strategic imperatives based on prioritized KITs/KIQs. The AD will lead and manage all CI activities within budget, operating with a high degree of autonomy. The AD will also be responsible to expand reach and identify new opportunities to further embed CI as an internal consulting partner and identify opportunities to innovate/streamline or simplify current CI processes and workstreams.

Core Activities

  • Assesses the competitive environment and emerging scientific data to inform R&D, clinical, regulatory, access and commercial strategies for BMS hematology/cell therapy assets.
  • Conducts analyses and research based on Key Intelligence Topics/Questions while adhering to consistent and established standards; synthesize and distill insights to provide actionable recommendations to key stakeholders across functions and levels within the organization.
  • Builds relationships and effectively influences all senior management stakeholders to advance the culture of insight-enabled decision making.
  • Implements all elements of internal CI model based on consultative engagement with key stakeholders: managing external CI vendors/partners, internal intelligence networks, and leveraging relevant internal IT tools and platforms.
  • Maintains forensics capability (asymmetric intelligence) via extrapolation, triangulation and internal expert validation.
  • Executes all projects within budget assigned, in a timely fashion, making tradeoffs as necessary.
  • Ensures appropriate dissemination of, and access to, competitive intelligence so it may be fully leveraged to answer strategic questions.
  • Demonstrates, and holds others accountable to high standards of business integrity.
  • Responds to ad hoc key business questions with expert analysis and timely delivery.
  • Key internal clients/customers: Commercial, Clinical Development, R&D, Access, Medical

Qualifications

  • BA/BS required, MBA/PharmD/PhD degree preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years of competitive intelligence (primary and secondary research) or relevant experience is required
  • Experience designing and facilitating competitive simulation workshops
  • Experience in oncology/hematology, or in autoimmune cell therapies is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and independently build proficiency in new categories or therapeutic areas
  • Solid business understanding of pharmaceutical drug development and commercialization pathways
  • Ability to think strategically, synthesize and analyze across data sources and develop actionable recommendations that support decision-making with strong, detail-oriented oral/written communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, intellectual curiosity, creativity, strategic thinking, and ability to work effectively in complex, rapidly changing environments
  • Proven ability to lead projects while effectively managing time and resources
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse teams across organizational lines and structures, to collaborate, manage expectations, and build consensus with colleagues in various geographies, roles, and hierarchical levels
  • Experience successfully supporting business decision making in a complex and highly dynamic corporate environment
  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical related CI data sources is desirable (e.g., Cortellis, commercially available clinical trial databases)
