Associate Director, Marketing & Communications- School of Social Work
Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Associate Director, Marketing & Communications- School of Social Work at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):
The Associate Director provides leadership and direction to employees and faculty within the School of Social Work for all marketing, communications, public relations, advertising and media relations efforts to assist in achieving the School’s strategic goals. Responsible for creating and implementing strategies that facilitate increased brand awareness both locally and nationally. Reports to the Dean of the School of Social Work.
Create communications in various media for the School which reflect the brand and to competitively position the School; locally and nationally. Responsible for content creation and content organization in all brochures, bulletins, event invitations, newsletters, magazines, postcards, HTML targeted emails, speeches, letters, memos and other publications for dissemination to both internal and external audiences.Assist the Dean with social media set up and continuing presence. Oversee the School’s online presence, including messaging, design and maintenance of the web site and on line social networking sites. Coordinate communications projects with vendors and contractors for the development and production of promotional materials, web site production and other collateral. Review and edit existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness, cross-selling implications and adherence to brand guidelines. Make changes to increase impact. Work collaboratively with the Office of Marketing and Communications, Admissions and the School to achieve University goals.
Lead public relations efforts, increasing the visibility of the School, its services, students, alumni, faculty and overall core values. Develop annual marketing plan that specifies communication objectives and products annually. Oversee and coordinate all marketing and communication budget activities, including planning, directing, and overseeing the marketing and communication budget preparation process, long and short term planning, cost projections, and budget estimates. Review and edit existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness, cross-selling implications and adherence to brand guidelines. Make changes to increase impact.
Interact with internal Board of Visitors and external stakeholders to enhance visibility. Represents the School in events such as national conferences through dissemination of material and information. Organize events that generate community and university visibility.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education Bachelor’s degree
Bachelor’s degree in communications or marketing or related field; Master’s degree in Marketing or Communications preferred.
Experience Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
5-8 years’ experience in marketing and communications role. Marketing management and strategic planning experience; a proven track record in developing and administering a marketing/communications program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Project Management- Ability to independently manage a variety of projects while ensuring appropriate tracking, quality control, follow-up and multiple deadlines are met. Strong time management. Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; adapt to changing conditions and develop strategies to achieve organizational goals.
Management Skills- Ability to set and implement a self-directed agenda. Ability to delegate effectively, including monitoring and feedback on delegated tasks. Consensus building skills. Excellent ability to prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of management in Client organizations throughout the University.
Organizational Leadership – Ability to plan and set strategic direction for marketing and communication efforts and the ability to work and lead a variety of people and situations. Need to be able to articulate the mission of Wayne State University and the School of Social Work to many constituencies.
Planning/Organizing skills- Ability to prioritize and plan work activities and develop strategies to achieve organizational goals, develop realistic action plans.
Customer Service Skills – responds to customer needs and practices follow-up to ensure customer needs are met.
Communication Skills-Ability to interact and articulate sensitively with students, faculty, staff and administrator in a multicultural and diverse community. Effective interpersonal and customer service skills, writes clearly and informatively. Responds courteously to requests for service and assistance. Possess top level interpersonal, presentation and facilitation skills.
Analytical Skills- Ability to quickly identify and understand problems and select appropriate resolutions.
Technical skills-Strong copywriting, editing and proofreading skills. Familiar with implementing and updating web sites.
