Experience & Education

  • 7+ years of oil / commodity markets price reporting, writing & editing experience.
  • Deep subject-matter expertise across crude and refined products markets, and a working knowledge of refining, trading and hedging.
  • Experience of managing teams of over 4/5. Strong leadership ability - which utilizes influence and promotes team collaboration, development and personal accountability.
  • BA or MA degree in finance, business, journalism or sciences.
  • Excellent communication skills that implement good listening, clear writing style; and strong verbal skills.
  • The ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities internally and externally.
  • Leverages numeracy skills in the editorial process, including and understanding of statistics and finance.
  • Solid understanding of economics and risk management principles.
  • Excellent at identifying improvements and efficiencies and implementing processes that continually promote productivity and quality improvements.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and expert at problem/conflict resolution.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Role: Platts is looking for a highly talented individual to join its Oil Markets Pricing leadership team in the position of Associate Editorial Director, Europe & Africa Oil. The role is responsible for the vital daily coverage and assessment of Platts EMEA Crude Oil and Fuel Oil markets. These busy markets include the major benchmarks of Dated Brent and High Sulfur Fuel Oil, as well as many other grades and specifications.
Reporting to the Global Director, Crude and Fuel Oil you will have responsibility for leading a large editorial team (9-13 people) covering the Oil markets, with editorial responsibilities across Europe & Africa in complex commodity coverage. The role supports strategic content development, as well as stewards day-to-day editorial operations. Included in this remit is leading the drive for relevance in the future of bunker fuels in the face of climate change
This is a key part of Platts Editorial leadership team and part of the businesses broader succession plan. To qualify it is highly likely that you will have 7+ years of oil/commodity markets price reporting, writing & editing experience as well as experience of managing. You will also have deep subject-matter expertise across oil markets and refined products, and a working knowledge of refining, trading and hedging.
Accountabilities

Manages publishing or pricing processes

  • Establishes and leads the publication or market pricing processes/workflow for a publication or team.
  • Determines what content will be prioritized for publication.
  • Regularly reviews the quality and content of news or pricing data produced in a sector/product area and develops and maintains Platts journalistic standards and practices.
  • Establishes editorial quality and operational metrics.
  • Collaborates with production/editorial operations teams in the publishing process.
  • Able to conduct primary reporting and editing functions on an as-needed basis.

Develops editorial staff.

  • Manages staff scheduling and assignments.
  • Coaches and mentors staff.
  • Conducts staff performance review.
  • Initiates staff training and development efforts.
  • In charge of hiring process for department.
  • Develops managerial talent within the team.

Leads news, content, and/or price development

  • Continuously evaluates editorial content and determines what has relevance to readership.
  • Engages subscribers to better understand market and trends; and to increase understanding around reader relevance.
  • Leverages understanding of reader relevance to continuously develop value-added news/information.
  • Continuously learns and analyzes market issues and looks for news and enterprise story opportunities.
  • Develops and maintains productive relationships with a broad base of key industry sources and can leverage them in the editorial process.
  • Engages market in methodology training and development.
