What You’ll Be Doing
The Capital Markets arm of CIBC provides corporate, government and institutional supports clients with innovative solutions to help them raise capital and grow and invest actively throughout North America and key financial centres around the world. To deliver on its vision to be our clients’ preferred capital markets banking partner across multiple products and services, both in Canada and where our core competencies can be exported. The Capital Markets mission is to bring Canadian Capital Markets products to Canada and the rest of the world and bring the world to Canada.
The Equities team at CIBC Capital Markets understands what institutional investors value most: original ideas, top service, and performance. Whether it is Bay Street or Wall Street, CIBC World Markets Inc. is there with the depth and breadth of product to advise on and execute the decisions of the investment community - anywhere in North America.
You will be based in Calgary and support the Analysts in our energy team and your reporting responsibility will be to our Senior Analyst.

How You’ll Succeed
- Research - As a Research Associate you will work closely with our Calgary-based equity research team covering the global and North American energy markets. This will include working across the energy value chain, but the principal focus will on covering the Canadian Large-cap E&Ps & Integrated, Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels sectors. In the role, they will gain valuable experience in gathering information, researching companies and industries leveraging primary, secondary and alternative sources, and recognizing and analyzing industry trends. The associate will also be active writing reports, as well as developing and maintaining financial models and databases and will assist in writing thematic reports. The successful candidate will have excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, will have a strong attention to detail, and will be very excel-proficient and financial-statement-literate.
- Client Focus - In cooperation with the Research Analysts you will participate in regular calls with public companies to get direct data from the senior management teams, as well as ad hoc calls, meetings and industry events. The position also provides the opportunity to liaise with our Sales, Trading, Investment Banking colleagues and clients as required.
Who You Are
- You have attainted an Undergrad and/or MBA degree in a relevant discipline.
- You possess a technical background (Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels). Please include a writing sample along with your cover letter, resume and transcripts (if recent graduate).
- You should demonstrate experience in the Energy industry. You must have a passion or strong interest in Capital Markets.
- You are technically savvy and can demonstrate excellent knowledge of PC applications (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access)
- You’re motivated by collective success. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with internal and external clients.
- You know that details matter. Excellent analytical and quantitative skills. Ability to complete and explain detailed financial and statistical analysis. Strong multi-tasking and time management skills. Ability to work independently in a deadline-oriented environment. Demonstrated interest in the capital markets industry through school courses, clubs and/or related work experience.
