Are you looking for teaching opportunity in Cell Membranes and Bio-Energetics? Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to teach next Spring term 2026.

The School of Natural Sciences is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach on the following module:

  • Cell Membranes and Bio-Energetics – Level 4
  • 66 hours of teaching, January to March 2026
  • Teaching on Tuesdays 1-4pm and 6-9pm.

Your appointment will be to cover the teaching of SCBS067H4, Cell Membranes and Bioenergetics (CMB), a 15 credit, Level 4 module on our BSc Biomedicine programme. You will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching within the biological sciences and to providing support to students that fosters academic growth.
CMB is taught in the Spring Term (Jan-Mar) and you will deliver two instances weekly: one in the afternoon and one in the evening, both on Tuesdays. The work will require 54 contact hours of teaching, plus 6 hours of test invigilation, as well as organization, communication with students, student support, and assessment marking.
The module syllabus has been designed and the teaching materials already exist although you will have some freedom to refine these and also to contribute to the design of the assessments, subject to the specifications in place.
As Associate Lecturer, you will have a PhD in biological sciences, or a related discipline; a sound knowledge of cell biology (especially as relating to transmembrane transport and mitochondrial respiration); and excellent communication and presentation skills.
You will have experience of classroom teaching at undergraduate level (ideally, Level 4) in a UK setting; proven ability to deliver material effectively in a classroom setting is essential. Experience of and/or willingness to develop skill in providing learning materials via a virtual learning environment (such as Moodle) is required.
Evidence of having supported students from a range of backgrounds to achieve their potential is also highly desirable. The role will also require you to work effectively as part of a busy team and also independently.
If you have knowledge in these areas, and you are an excellent and innovative teacher with a track record of student engagement, and want to contribute to an impactful educational experience - apply with us at Birkbeck today.
Remuneration:
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
Contract:
Fixed-term, January - March 2026, part-time contract. Please submit a CV and statement for consideration. Closing date: Sunday 21 September 2025, interview date: Tuesday 7 October 2025.
