POSITION SUMMARY:

Join the University of Dayton as an Associate Mechanical Engineer in the UDRI - Nonstructural Materials Division! The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a talented and driven Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Nonstructural Materials division. This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of a respected research institution dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.
This position will focus on novel erosion testing for the AFRL Erosion Test Facilities at Wright-Patterson AFB, operated and maintained by UDRI. The engineer will provide technical and innovative solutions using sound mechanical engineering practices. This person is responsible for operating, maintaining and upgrading the AFRL subsonic and supersonic rain and particle erosion test apparatus. The AFRL Erosion Test Rigs are unique testing capabilities that evaluate the erosion resistance of advanced aerospace materials. This role supports the execution of DOD and Industry erosion testing, research, development and transition materials technology projects. This engineer will also work with teams to design, develop and test machine hardware and software, customize existing machinery as well as new technologies. The engineer will also be responsible for assisting customers with custom fixture designs to accommodate nonstandard test articles. The person will be working in a laboratory environment and therefore, being a team player and having, flexibility, and attention to detail are key to success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineer or related field
  • Ability to troubleshoot, spec out parts, and resolve issues to maintain equipment
  • Knowledgeable of various machine shop tools and use
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to write coherent test data reports
  • Familiar with Computer Aided Design Software, i.e. SolidWorks, and LabView
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen
  • Due to the security clearance requirements for this position, the successful applicant
    must be able to pass a National Agency Check at the time of hire
    and obtain and maintain a security clearance with enhanced measures

An R2 must meet all R1 minimum qualifications in addition to the qualifications listed below.

  • A minimum of three years of related experience is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering (M.S.)
  • Proficient with Computer Aided Design Software, i.e. SolidWorks, and LabView
  • Experienced with the proper use of various machine tools and accessories
  • Experience with preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical systems
  • Familiar with the fundamental of fluid flow dynamics
  • Familiar with the fundamental of particulate flow dynamics
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment with other disciplines
  • Customer orientated
