Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Associate Physician Program Director

Inpatient and outpatient care:

  • Functions as a member of the team of Associate Physician for Hematology Oncology, Gynecology Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology services that rotate through ambulatory and inpatient cancer care.
  • Liaises with nurses, house staff, attending staff and other members of the health care team in the development and implementation of the overall patient care plan.
  • Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies or protocols. These include insertion of peripheral intravenous line, taking blood samples in emergency situations, insertion of Foley catheters, removing central lines, insertion or removal of sutures and insertion and removal of nasogastric tube, wound care, injections including hormone therapy depot injections.
  • Collaborates with the each of the oncology teams responsible for chemotherapy orders for patients receiving a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  • Arranges investigations and follow-up with an adequate action plan.
  • Communicates with patients, families, referring, and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
  • Counsels and support families of patients who are terminally ill.
  • Receives, manages, and discharges patients requiring supportive care in preparation for radiotherapy, systemic therapy and cellular therapy during, and after the completion of treatment.
  • Collaborates with referring services including oncology sub-specialists, the emergency departments and palliative care to minimize the need for hospital admissions and emergency department visits.
  • Organizes and coordinates transfer of care to other services within central zone and across the province.
  • Orientates PG1’s who are new to the ward
  • Participates in resident/medical student training and evaluation
  • Bedside teaching with Clinical Clerks who are doing oncology rotations
  • Attends and contributes to educational sessions and rounds as time permits
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service.
