DESCRIPTION:
The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Philosophy of Science and/or Technology. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
This search aligns with the University’s commitment to strategically and proactively promote diversity among our community members (Statement on Equity, Diversity & Excellence). Recognizing that Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized communities have experienced inequities that have developed historically and are ongoing, we strongly welcome and encourage candidates from those communities to apply.
Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Philosophy of Science and/or Technology or a closely related discipline, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will specialize in general philosophy of science, or the philosophies of the natural sciences, health, data, information, or race, with particular expertise in Philosophy of Race, Philosophy of non-Western Science, Indigenous knowledges, and/or philosophical work at the intersection of race, science, and technology. The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including sample course materials and teaching evaluations) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the IHPST’s research-intensive graduate programs and its undergraduate programs in science and society and history and philosophy of science by, for instance, teaching undergraduate courses in the Philosophy of Science and/or Technology; graduate courses in the Philosophy of Science and/or Technology; and by developing courses related to the candidate’s own research expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will have the ability to teach some of the Institute’s existing courses, including but not limited to HPS100H1 Introduction to the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology and the HPS1100Y Advanced Research graduate seminar.
The IHPST is a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of scholars pursuing innovative research into the histories and philosophies of science, technology, and medicine, past and present. The Institute further forges intellectual and pedagogical connections between the humanities and STEM disciplines. We anticipate that the successful candidate will be involved in collaborative initiatives in research and teaching with other cognate departments depending upon their area(s) of expertise.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
