Your Opportunity:
The Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton has an opening for an Associate Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist (also called Radiation Oncology Medical Physics Resident). The Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) is the comprehensive cancer centre for northern Alberta and a lead centre for the province-wide prevention, research and treatment program. It provides advanced medical and supportive cancer care, patient and professional education, and is a leader in cancer research. The Associate Medical Physicist works as a member of the CCI Medical Physics team. The Medical Physics Department is committed to excellence in providing scientific and technical support for the clinical, teaching, and research activities of the Institute’s treatment and diagnostic services; and leadership in the application of physics, radiobiological modeling and engineering principles to cancer care. The Department has four CAMPEP* accredited programs: Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program, Diagnostic Imaging Physics Residency Program, Medical Physics Graduate Program (MSc and PhD), and Certificate Program in Medical Physics. The Medical Physics Resident works under the supervision and mentorship of professionally certified Medical Physicists. The CCI’s team of Medical Physicists consists of Radiation Oncology Physicists and Diagnostic Imaging Physicists who have clinical and academic responsibilities. The Medical Physics team is responsible for Radiation Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging and Research equipment. The Resident’s work will concentrate on radiation oncology. Training follows CAMPEP accredited residency standards to provide rigorous, in-depth and thorough clinical experience and education required to start the professional Medical Physicist certification process. *Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs
Description:

Clinical and Clinical Support activities [75%] may include: participating in patient-related clinical and clinical support duties and rotations, such as system calibrations and/or performance evaluations; quality control; safety and compliance tests; system performance evaluations; treatment planning and delivery for radiation therapy. Teaching [10%]: participating in the Clinical Physics Didactic Lectures for training Physicians, Therapists and Technologists; participating as a member of the team teaching University of Alberta Medical Physics Graduate Program labs [Oncology 554 (Laboratory in Medical Radiation Physics); providing in-services for continuing education of staff as required. Other [10%]: independently reviewing Medical Physics journals; contributing to the collective medical physics knowledge base; as a member of the Medical Physics team, participating in the development of new clinical procedures, protocols, and testing new technology; participating in QA rounds and Medical Physics seminars; training students and contractors for quality assurance work; under the mentorship of certified medical physicists, developing and demonstrating competencies as required by residency program. Research [5%]: performing research approved by the Director of Medical Physics.
