OVERVIEW

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Associate Scientist to join our innovative research team. The Fermentation Scientist will conduct basic research using fermentation experiments and other biological models and analyses. In this role, you will develop procedures for understanding anaerobic mix culture fermentation. In this role, you will perform research as part of a multidisciplinary team to plan and execute experiments and effectively communicate results to stakeholders.

EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemical/Bioscience Engineering, Food science, or a related field.
  • 7+ years related laboratory experience with knowledge of regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of anerobic fermentation and microbial physiology
  • Strong knowledge of upstream bioprocess development techniques for microbial products
  • Strong statistical and data analysis skills
  • Use statistical methods to analyze fermentation data
  • Good knowledge in the field of metagenomics of microbiomes, with understanding of bioinformatics
  • Experience producing volatile fatty acids by anaerobic fermentation would be highly valuable
  • Good technical writing and communication skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to support multiple projects simultaneously

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position will present exposure to an industrial environment and requires support and compliance with the published Company PPE policy including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, appropriate attire, safety shoes, hard hat, hearing protection, etc.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

    Pay: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year

Responsibilities
  • Expectation to design, conduct, analyze, and present results from experiments within cross-functional project teams aligned with scientific and operational objectives.
  • Perform experiments to isolate, bank, functionally characterize, and manipulate aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from a variety sample types/source.
  • Perform anaerobic fermentation with open mixed cultures (archaea and bacteria)
  • Determine the impact of macro- and micro-nutrients on population dynamics in mixed culture systems
  • Use of metagenomics to bring insights and generate leads for improving titer and yield and volatile fatty acid profiles
  • Lead fermentation experiments to increase lab-scale production and product yields (approx. 1-10 L)
  • Use DOE and statistical methodology for improving fermentation titers
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, quality assurance, and process development, to address quality-related issues
  • Determine specific technical approaches to be implemented to successfully deliver project goals on a startup timeline and budget
  • Conduct experiments with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for key laboratory workflows and train colleagues as needed
  • Promote a culture of safety, responsible laboratory practices, and continuous improvement within the laboratory
