Department: COM | Biochemistry - Enemark Lab Department's Website: Summary of Job Duties: A Research Staff Scientist position is available to support the computational and data science needs of the newly established Structural Biology Core at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). This position will play a key role in advancing the mission of the Arkansas INBRE and the Center for Molecular Interactions in Cancer (CMIC) COBRE, both supported by the NIH. The successful candidate will apply computational and biomedical research expertise to support structural biology efforts—including cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, and structure prediction—and make these resources accessible to both UAMS investigators and the Arkansas INBRE network. This is an exciting opportunity to impact diverse research projects within the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute (WPRCI), which has made significant investments to expand structural biology and cancer research infrastructure. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, or related field PLUS five (5) years of experience in computational support for structural biology or molecular modeling Proficiency in Linux system administration and high-performance computing (HPC) environments Hands-on experience with structural biology software (e.g., RELION, CryoSPARC, Phenix, CCP4, Chimera, PyMOL) Demonstrated ability to analyze and visualize complex biological datasets Preferred Qualifications: Experience developing custom analysis pipelines or Python-based computational tools Familiarity with cryo-EM data workflows and image processing techniques Experience training or supporting researchers in computational biology applications Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment This position is a Designated Research Position and involves scientific investigation or development that involves technologies, designs, or technical data considered sensitive enough to potentially impact national security and therefore requires strict controls on export or transfer to foreign entities. Maintain and manage specialized Linux-based GPU computing systems for structure processing and data analysis. Apply and optimize existing software packages for structure determination, modeling, and refinement. Develop and implement custom Python scripts or computational tools to facilitate and integrate structural research workflows. Ensure secure data storage, backup, and archival of structural data. Train students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientists in the use of specialized computational resources and structural biology software. Support educational and outreach activities by helping Arkansas INBRE network members access computational resources and tools. Maintain system performance and software updates for dedicated computational infrastructure. Collaborate with UAMS IT and vendors to resolve hardware or network issues. Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal data management and cybersecurity policies. Collaborate with principal investigators, staff, and trainees to implement new computational protocols.
