The Packer Collegiate Institute, a vibrant PK-12 Grade independent school located in Brooklyn, NY, seeks dedicated and enthusiastic Associate Teachers for anticipated openings in the Preschool and Lower School for the 2026/27 school year. Associate Teachers are regarded as teachers-in-training, and their role and responsibilities grow as they gain experience and knowledge. Associate Teachers typically remain at Packer for two years, with a potential extension for a third year. Anticipated start: August 2026 Key Responsibilities: Collaborate with the Head Teacher to plan and implement rich, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning opportunities across subject areas Support the academic, social, and emotional growth of students by providing individualized and small-group instruction. In partnership with Head Teacher, co-teach and lead full group learning Facilitate a positive, inclusive classroom environment that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and respect Assist in classroom management and organization, ensuring a safe, productive, and intentional learning space. Support students during transitions Participate in assessment and documentation, and contribute to tracking student progress and development Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and families, fostering strong partnerships Participate in school events, meetings, and professional development opportunities Step into the Head Teacher role when necessary, ensuring continuity of instruction and care Supervise and engage students during play and learning to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Facilitate conflict resolution and collaborative problem-solving as needed Qualifications and Skills: Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Education or a related field preferred Interest in pursuing a career in education and a strong passion for working with young learners Prior experience with children in educational or similar settings Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills A commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the classroom Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a growth-oriented learning mindset Physical Requirements: The physical requirements for faculty (both Associate and Head Teachers) align with the physical demands of working with young children. Generally, the role requires 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing. Mobility/Dexterity: Ability to move around the classroom, bend, kneel, squat, and sit on the floor to interact with students at their level for extended periods Ability to lift and carry children or objects weighing up to 25–50 pounds (e.g., a child needing assistance, classroom materials, etc.) Ability to move freely indoors and outdoors, including navigating playgrounds, sidewalks, and nature-based learning areas Ability to keep track of multiple children simultaneously and respond to their needs promptly Competent hand-eye coordination to manipulate small objects, loose parts, craft materials, scissors, and writing tools. Ability to help children with tasks such as tying shoes, zipping jackets, or assisting with toileting needs (if required) Stamina: Ability to stand or walk for extended periods. Ability to maintain energy throughout a school day (which can involve teaching, supervising recess, and leading physical activities) Classroom and Activity-Specific Tasks Classroom Setup and Maintenance: Rearranging desks, chairs, and other classroom furniture Preparing bulletin boards or displays, which might involve climbing a small step ladder Outdoor Activities: Supervising and sometimes participating in outdoor play (in a variety of weather), which may include running, walking, and ensuring safety during physical play Emergency Response: Reacting quickly in emergencies to assist students, evacuate the classroom, or provide basic first aid Why Join Us?
