Principal Duties & Responsibilities 1.Clinical 1.1To be responsible for providing initial and update training and competency assessment for all staff clinical and non-clinical) involved in the transfusion process 1.2To be responsible for the design and development of training packages for all staff across the Trust relating to all areas of the transfusion process 1.3To act as a resource for advice and support to all staff involved in the transfusion process. 1.4To act as a liaison between the hospital transfusion laboratory and clinical departments. 1.5 Assist with the development / updating of Trust policies and guidelines covering all aspects of transfusion of blood components and blood products. Implement and promote these policies and guidelines within the Trust 1.6To be responsible for the investigation and reporting of incidents and near misses associated with transfusion.
1.7To promote awareness and implementation of research-based practices relating to the field of transfusion. 1.8Promote high standards of practice at all times and assist in the identification of potential hazards or unsafe practices/procedures and report these to senior members of the Hospital Transfusion Team. 2. Administrative 2.1By liaising with the Consultant Haematologist responsible for transfusion, organise monthly Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT) meetings including setting the agenda, preparing required reports and formal minute taking.
2.2By liaising with the Consultant Haematologist responsible for transfusion, organise Hospital Transfusion Group (HTG) meetings including setting the agenda, preparing required reports and formal minute taking. 2.3To maintain records of staff training and competency assessment involving manipulation of data in spreadsheets and databases. 3. Audit 3.1 To monitor care given to patients by assisting in regularly auditing transfusion practices within the Trust which will be used to design, implement and review protocols as appropriate.
This will involve auditing the transfusion process from the laboratory to patients bedsides. 3.2 To be responsible for the design of local audits of all parts of the transfusion process, data collection, detailed report writing and presentation to the Trust. 3.3 To actively participate in multidisciplinary, Regional, and National audit involving blood transfusion. 4.
Development 4.1Promote the safe and appropriate use of blood through new initiatives, in liaison with the HTG. 4.2Promote and encourage use of alternatives to transfusion in all clinical areas with the support of the HTG. 4.3As a specialist in the field of transfusion, liaise with clinicians in the Trust, peers and external agencies to maintain and improve detailed knowledge of all areas of blood transfusion and keep up to date with current transfusion developments. 4.4Attend professional study days/meetings as appropriate and maintain updated knowledge of current professional and clinical developments.
5. Laboratory 5.1Liaise with staff from Black Country Pathology Services to ensure that best practice is occurring in the transfusion laboratory. 5.2Provide education and updates to transfusion laboratory staff as required
