Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Assistant Teacher collaborates closely with all other members of the program team to provide nurturing care and education to young children in a group setting, under the supervision of the Child Care Supervisor, in accordance with the goals and curriculum plans, philosophy, policies of the Centre and in compliance with the Child Care and Early Years Act 2014 (CCEYA).
Accountabilities:

Service Responsibilities:

  • Perform general supervision and care of a classroom, safety and well-being of the children.
  • Interact with the children to provide support and care.
  • Recognize and respond to the needs of each child by using developmentally appropriate teaching and child behavior management techniques.
  • Assist with effective risk management; monitor food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies and facility cleanliness/maintenance; provide emergency first aid and complete reports and file incident reports as required.
  • Assist in orientating new children and families; provides on-going feedback on child’s development and behaviour.
  • Participate in special events put on by the Child Care Centre.
  • Assist in the planning, preparing and implementing stimulating, age-appropriate activities that encourage children’s creativity and learning and promote each child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development.
  • Role models appropriate behaviours and attitudes supporting the mission of The Learning Corner.
  • Ensure that all information about children, family, staff, visitors, and volunteers are strictly confidential; and that activity records and statistics are stored in a secure location.
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with parents.
  • Must know and implement: Centre routines and practices; CCEYA regulations; the Health Department guidelines.
  • Attend and participate actively in all program/centre, staff, parental or other meetings as required.
  • Share responsibility for maintaining program equipment in good repair; assist with toy/equipment disinfecting.
  • Share responsibility for maintaining the play environments and storage areas in an organized and clutter-free condition.
  • Familiar with environmental assessment tool (ECERS) used by the centre.
  • Engage in positive collaboration with the other programs and staff of the Centre in coordinating the effective use of equipment, facilities and personnel.
  • May be required to safely escort children to and from school and on trips or walks outside the centre.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Maintain information in confidence as required.
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner and assist personnel whom the position supports in developing those skills as required.
  • Participate in probationary and annual performance appraisal process.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate fully and consistently as a conscientious team member in caring for the children and in the overall operation of the program and centre; maintain regular and open communication with program team members and all other co-workers.
  • Work with the Supervisory staff to ensure that the program operates at all times in compliance with all child care licensing standards, contractual, legal and internal accreditation requirements; ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Participate in regular fire drills and other emergency procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and attend/maintain all mandatory training.
