Description STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The Athletic Trainer will Carry out the mission daily to exceed expectations and be the difference in the lives of those I serve. Commit to excellence: Work to achieve department and organizational goals to achieve JRMC’s vision Follow JRMC Healthy Roots Fulfill the duties of an Athletic Trainer as identified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Follow state and Federal law This is an full time benefited position working 80 hours per two-week pay period. Days of work are Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm. JOB FUCTIONS Quality: Athletic Trainer is responsible to evaluate, treat, and prevent athletes’ injuries. The athletic trainer will provide coverage to local high schools including attending practices, games, matches, and other events as needed by the JPS The athletic trainer will utilize sound knowledge base related to the population served, following the prescribed treatments of referring physician. Demonstrates an ability and knowledge of athletic injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and reconditioning. Uses all available resources in the assessment process and independently reassess and report significant findings to medical team and athlete. Demonstrates knowledge, competency, and skill in concussion and head injury management. Provides prevention of athletic injuries through the application of protective tapings, wraps and braces, and assists in the design of practices to help reduce the incidence of injury. Monitors the effectiveness of taping, strapping, bracing, and equipment to provide optimal care for the athlete. Utilizes appropriate, sound and up-to-date clinical techniques to effectively assess and treat athletic injuries. Advises coaches of flexibility, strengthening and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and optimize performance. Evaluates, treats, and trains athletes how to build strength to prevent or avoid further injury. Provides immediate care of athletic injuries and refers the athlete to medical facilities when necessary. Designs and supervises rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries under the direction of a referring physician per protocols. Ability to follow plan of care established within established policies and procedures for the athlete. Acts as a resource for physicians and physical therapists. Will modify/progress athlete within physician guidelines and will consult with staff on the care of the athlete in a timely manner. Maintains communication with physicians. Maintains line of communication with school administrators and coaches in the advancement of the sports medicine program. Completes and maintains accurate medical records for injuries, treatment, rehabilitation, and physician referrals in appropriate manner under HIPAA guidelines. Medical histories and correspondence will be kept on file in the athletic training room. Provides detailed information of athlete status and report information to appropriate individuals in a timely fashion. Completes injury evaluation forms for each athlete and keeps copies on file. Information will be compiled into a report to be provided to the school monthly or as requested. Supervises and instructs students at all levels. Counsels and advises athletes on health-related issues, including nutrition, diet, exercise, and substance abuse. Follow safety guidelines. Identifies problems and works to resolve safety issues as they occur and in accordance with policies asking for assistance when necessary. Service: May serve as a consultant to the middle school athletic program by advising middle school athletes in the athletic training room on an appointment basis. Participates in special assignments, projects or in-services. Provide team fitness evaluations. Written results of fitness evaluations and subsequent training recommendations will be provided to appropriate coaches. JRMC and School will mutually agree upon the dates of service and fee. Utilizes all available resources to expand knowledge. People: Requires ability to work both independently and with a team. Responsible to conduct timely initial and follow-up communication with coaches, parents and physicians regarding athletic injuries, treatment and rehabilitation. Completes assignments in a timely manner; answers questions; takes initiative to identify services or items that would provide value to the athlete and school. Participates in the marketing of the athletic training program within the school district and the medical community through newsletters, brochures, medical contacts, etc. Develops schedule to attend school sport events, including game and practice coverage, with prompt attendance. Includes coverage of athletic training room, practices and home events at school. Acts as a resource to the school, in providing medical coverage and the advancement of the school’s athletic program, eliminating unsafe practices, and enhancing health and conditioning programs. When multiple home events occur causing conflicts of schedule, the athletic trainer will cover the home event that demonstrates the highest injury rate as published in the literature. Attendance of athletic department meetings. Attend other reasonable events/programs, as mutually agreed upon, including educational programs, workshops, on-call service for after hour consultation, pre-season meetings and development and supervision of student athletic training programs. Finance: Advises and assists the Activities Director with the ordering of athletic training room equipment and supplies. Uses own time wisely and respects the time of others. Performs all other duties as assigned. Requirements QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS OF JOB POSITION: Preparation & Training - The Athletic Trainer must be in good standing and hold a state license to practice as an athletic trainer. Must be certified by the Board of Certification, Inc and maintain the standards established by the National Athletic Trainers’ association included in the NATA Code of Ethics. BLS and AED certification required or must be completed within 3 months. Will complete CPR every other year. Work Experience - One to two years of experience working in the fitness industry or athletic training preferred. Attendance - Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule. Analytical Ability - High level of problem solving skills is required to the scope and complexity of the discipline responsibility. Occasionally it necessitates the development of creative solutions to problems. Must be able to react to emergency situations, making timely judgments and decisions. Must be able to handle multiple tasks in a hectic situation. Requires analytical, deductive reasoning/problem solving abilities, handling multiple priorities, and the ability to direct and evaluate the activities. Independent Judgement - The Athletic Trainer will be required to make independent judgments based on standards of care. Substandard performance in skills or judgment may adversely affect athlete. Must maintain confidentiality at all times. Contact with Others and Interpersonal Skills - Works effectively with others, possessing tact, discretion, and diplomacy. Must demonstrate social sensitivity and the ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner with youth athletes, parents, school administrators and coaches. Excellent communication skills are necessary because of the constant communication, both oral and written. Willing to accept feedback; evaluates ideas other than own. Is knowledgeable of organizational structure and utilizes appropriate channels of communication. Demonstrates organizational skills. Is able to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks in an efficient manner. Demonstrates creativity, insight, integrity, and initiative. Responsibility for Making Decisions & Recommendations - It is the responsibility of the Athletic Trainer to continuously uphold the highest degree of performance within currently defined and acceptable Behavior Standards. Policy and Procedures - Establishes policies and procedures, standards of patient care, treatment and services, and standards of rehab practices. Supervising the Work of Others - The Athletic Trainer provides functional supervision and instruction within the athletic training environment. Responsibilities include supervising and directing students at all levels, providing education in clinical skills, safety practices, and professional standards, and overseeing their participation in treatment, event coverage, and rehabilitation activities. The Athletic Trainer may provide guidance to student volunteers or support personnel during practices, games, or treatment sessions, ensuring tasks are performed safely and appropriately. This position does not include formal performance evaluation, disciplinary authority, or administrative supervision; all supervisory activities occur under the direction of the Rehab Services Manager. Responsibility for Welfare of Others - The physical and emotional wellbeing of athletes is highly impacted by the performance of the Athletic Trainer. The role requires continuous vigilance in identifying, evaluating, and responding to athletic injuries, and errors in judgment may result in significant harm, including exacerbation of injuries or unsafe return-to-play decisions. The Athletic Trainer must maintain strict confidentiality and uphold all HIPAA requirements. The position requires rapid and accurate clinical decision-making in both routine and emergency situations, including concussion management, heat-related illness, fractures, and other acute injuries. The Athletic Trainer also plays a key role in supporting the psychological wellbeing of athletes during rehabilitation, providing guidance that impacts motivation, confidence, and safe recovery. Mental/Visual Effort - Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must demonstrate physical and emotional ability to meet agreed upon work schedule and performance standards required by the position. Visual acuity necessary. A very high degree of mental application and attention to details. Assessment, treatment, planning, goal setting, program development, documentation, record keeping, scheduling, and communications are all included on the above. Working Conditions - Work environment consists of exposure to outdoor weather conditions and indoor conditions. Will require some driving and travel. OSHA job classification – this position is defined as Category I in which the employee may have exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Position may require exposure to patients with infectious disease. Must practice aseptic techniques and observe Standard Precautions. Participates in and complies with JRMC Safety Management Program. Work may be beyond normal working hours. Work may be on weekends. Must be available for flexible work hours. Position is subject to frequent interruptions. Must be able to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time. Physical & Sensory Effort - The duties of the Athletic Trainer require continuous physical activity and sustained sensory attention in both indoor and outdoor athletic environments. The position involves frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching while performing on-field assessments, taping, bracing, and providing injury care. Moderate to heavy lifting is required when assisting athletes, moving equipment, or responding to emergency situations, consistent with the physical-requirements table. The role requires continuous visual observation to evaluate athlete mechanics, identify potential or acute injuries, and complete accurate documentation, as well as continuous hearing and listening to communicate effectively with athletes, coaches, parents, and medical personnel. Sensory and mental effort increases during emergency situations, concussion assessments, and sideline decision-making. The Athletic Trainer must work in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather, and must follow Standard Precautions in this OSHA Category I role.
