Job Description
NBC Sports’ audio teams are passionate about their craft, dedicated to delivering immersive audio experiences that enhance viewer engagement. Recognized as innovative and respected within the global broadcast audio industry, NBC Audio pioneers cutting-edge sound design techniques such as 5.1.4 Immersive Audio to capture the nuances of sports environments. Collaboration is at the core of our success as we push the boundaries of audio production and set new industry standards.
As an Audio Systems Engineer, you will work closely with NBC Senior Director of Audio Engineering and other senior audio personnel to design and implement state-of-the-art audio systems for live sports broadcasts. This includes planning, designing, and testing all forms of broadcast audio systems—from analog to IP-based systems (ST2110)—in complex environments. Your expertise in current and emerging technologies from leading manufacturers will be critical in driving innovation and ensuring seamless operations.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in television broadcast environments
  • BS degree in Engineering, Communications, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to work overtime, including nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be willing to work primarily in Monroe, CT, with secondary office duties in Stamford, CT.
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization in the United States.
  • National and international travel required, particularly during Olympic Games.
  • Required On-Site: This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.
Responsibilities
  • Audio Systems Design: Support the development of comprehensive broadcast audio systems compatible with IP-based workflows (Dante, ST2110, AES67).
  • Documentation & Planning: Create conceptual designs and detailed audio-specific drawings using tools like Lucidchart for Olympic and sports production teams.
  • Venue Audio Planning: Coordinate a large number of technologies using NBC proprietary software to ensure field engineering teams have the necessary equipment and infrastructure for successful implementation of broadcasts.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with venue engineering systems, IT networks, transmission services, and distribution teams to integrate NBC Audio systems into a unified workflow.
  • Innovation in Sound Design: Test advanced ground-based or cloud-based DSP technologies; present findings to leadership for potential implementation.
  • Live Event Support: Provide technical expertise during live events to ensure or enhance sound quality using advanced mixing techniques aligned with NBC’s signature sound.
Additionally, you will assist with integration projects involving signal flow planning, testing, commissioning, and training staff on new systems. Staying updated on emerging virtualization tools for remote workflows, immersive sound technologies, and wearable audio tech innovations is essential to enhancing broadcast quality.
