JOB DESCRIPTION
The Corporate Audit Services (CAS) Audit Project Manager is responsible for supporting the strategic direction, leadership, and coordination of CAS’s risk-based audit assurance activities over U.S. Bancorp’s Credit Risk Review (loan review) function. Credit Risk Review provides independent assessment and effective challenge of the Company’s credit activities, including the quality of the Bank’s loan portfolios (e.g., commercial, corporate, counterparty, retail, etc.) and credit related processes (credit policies, underwriting, loan administration, credit rating assignments, problem loan management, etc.). This role also supports the CAS Senior Audit Manager - Credit Risk and CAS Senior Audit Manager - Credit Risk Portfolio Reviews in providing the Audit Committee and senior management with independent assurance and advisory services designed to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes of U.S. Bancorp.
The Audit Project Manager is primarily responsible for the completion of credit related audit engagements with minimal supervision from managers. Although there are no direct reports under this position, this role will require working with or supervising other audit team members during audit engagements. The Audit Project Manager is expected to perform and monitor progress of audit engagements against plan and schedule, assess work performed by audit engagement teams (as applicable), and provide coaching and on-the-job training to ensure engagements are completed with sufficient subject matter knowledge and conform with internal audit policies and procedures. This individual will have skills and experiences needed to monitor and assess credit related activities across U.S. Bancorp and deliver updates to senior management and key stakeholders.
PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience.
- Ten years of applicable experience.
- Seven or more years of large bank credit/loan review experience through: past work in credit/loan review departments, internal audit loan review coverage, commercial loan underwriting departments at large banking institutions; regulatory agency loan review experience; or loan review experience at a large consulting firm.
- Extensive knowledge of credit underwriting, credit administration and monitoring, problem loan management, credit risk ratings, etc. (with an emphasis on different commercial/wholesale loan portfolios).
- Strong understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and financial industry and regulatory trends that impact credit risk management, particularly related to credit review activities.
- Other preferred skills include:
o Understanding of the practical application of the IIA Practice Guide on Reliance by Internal Audit on Other Assurance Providers
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
o Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
o Proven leadership skills.
o Proven adaptability to changing priorities.
o Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
o Relevant Financial Service Industry knowledge and understanding of Safety and Soundness expectations for large commercial banks.
o Understanding Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Standards and the common definition of internal controls.
o CIA, CPA, CRC, or other relevant professional designation or advanced degree.
Responsibilities:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Completing audit engagements while ensuring high work quality and timely deliverables.
- Assessing work performed by other staff and providing coaching notes that are relevant to the scope, accuracy and completeness of work performed.
- Analyzing business processes, key risks and critical controls; interviewing auditees; determining audit scopes; evaluating control adequacy and effectiveness; and developing and executing audit testing programs.
- Identifying and reviewing issues to ensure material risks are captured, root causes are identified, and effective remediation plans are developed.
- Monitoring progress of audit engagements against plan and making necessary adjustments.
- Assisting managers in dispositioning issues and drafting audit reports.
- Collaborating across the lines of defense in evaluating business processes, risks, and controls. Coordinating with other internal audit subject matter teams to ensure appropriate and efficient coverage of business and credit related products, services, processes and risks.
- Providing on-the-job training to CAS members, including sharing knowledge of credit risk inherent within products, services, and delivery systems; company credit policies and procedures; applicable laws and regulations; and formal/informal control frameworks.
- Assisting other audit teams and performing other duties as requested by management.
