Description

Job Title: Projects and Automation Engineer
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: £55,000 - £60,000 per annum
Location: Newport, Shropshire
Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 (flexibility required for occasional additional hours)

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience in project delivery and automation within a fast-paced environment
  • Strong knowledge of Siemens systems including S7, STEP 7, and Simatic
  • Experience in electrical maintenance, PLC programming, and instrumentation
  • Capable of working with external contractors, OEMs, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work on own initiative
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills
  • High attention to detail and strong organisational abilities
  • Team-oriented with a proactive and enthusiastic approach

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or
  • ONC / HNC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or
  • Engineering Degree or
  • Minimum Level 3 City & Guilds with at least 5 years of industry experience
  • Strong background in automation and electrical maintenance
Responsibilities
  • Deliver engineering projects from concept to completion, including automation-led improvements
  • Own and lead projects and upgrades throughout the full project lifecycle
  • Manage and maintain automation systems, ensuring software is up to date and obsolescence risks are addressed
  • Analyse maintenance and performance data to identify opportunities to improve OEE
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement sustainable solutions to recurring technical issues
  • Liaise with OEM automation specialists to resolve complex faults
  • Maintain the site panel risk assessment register and implement improvement actions
  • Support and coach maintenance engineers on best practices and use of automation systems
  • React promptly to site automation issues to minimise downtime
  • Collaborate with leadership on smart factory software implementation and strategic projects
  • Promote and support a culture of structured problem solving and cost-effective maintenance
  • Ensure projects meet health and safety standards and regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and departmental 5S initiatives
