What You’ll Be Doing:
- Mechanical design of robot and assembly systems, production gauges and error proofs, assembly jigs, and equipment automation.
- Analyzing engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, etc., in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
- Performing engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc., as related to project designs.
- Analyzing designs and systems for compliance with applicable standards (e.g., machine safety, AGC and/or customer-specific).
- Reviewing electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
- Reviewing machine operations and machine sequences with the project team.
- Selecting appropriate purchase components for mechanical assemblies and creating requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.
- Producing working drawings, detail drawings, and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies, and main assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Reviewing drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
- Assisting the manufacturing team by resolving any issues during the build, debug, and integration of projects.
- Communicating with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff, as well as with vendors for technical information and specifications.
- Communicating requested design changes to the AGC team or respective manager.
- Responsible for communicating time estimates, resource requirements, and progress on design tasks to the Automation Engineering Manager.
- Periodically supervising the mechanical design effort on a project level, delegating tasks to a team of people.
- Organizing documentation, including quotes, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc., on projects.
- Assisting on proposals and estimating mechanical design labor hours.
- Assisting in developing design and department standards.
- Periodically overseeing Co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.
- Adhering to all health and safety rules and procedures.
- Coordinating continuous improvement initiatives.
- Performing other related duties as required.
What We’re Looking For:
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- 5+ years’ experience in special purpose equipment and/or automation design.
- Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems is an asset.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks.
- Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques is an asset.
- Strong ability to conceptualize and create concepts and solutions for complex design requirements, sometimes from sketches or verbal concepts.
- Thorough knowledge of the use of pneumatic systems and electrical devices (e.g., switches, load cells, LVDTs) is essential.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Capability of giving and taking direction.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels of the organization.
- High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
