The Automation Technician is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems in all areas of Steelmaking, includes the Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Metallurgical Furnace, Continuous Caster, and all associated support equipment. The Automation Technician will test existing equipment and determine if components of a system need to be upgraded or replaced. The Automation Technician must be proactive and a have strong sense of urgency, good verbal communication and attention to detail.
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintain equipment in Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Metallurgical Furnace, Continuous Caster, and all support equipment.
- Install, maintain, repair and troubleshoot instrumentation, controls and electrical systems (480VAC/120VAC/24VDC) including, but not limited to: transmitters, low voltage switchgear, transformers, protective relays and motor control centers, 24 VDC systems, PLC’s, UPS, conduits, cable, relays, instrument loops, flow meters, pressure probes, temperature probes, level probes, switches, alarm and telemetry systems
- Perform preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance in accordance with established procedures.
- Properly uses instrumentation, control and electrical test equipment and other similar tools.
- Opens and closes circuit breakers as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation.
- Perform plant electrical switching and lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) of equipment in accordance with approved procedures and prudent operations and maintenance best practices.
- Read electrical schematics and apply technical knowledge to understand and diagnose equipment and electrical failures.
- Document completed tasks, developing PM plan, and mitigating future breakdowns.
- Work with other maintenance, operations, and automation personnel to solve multifaceted problems.
- Work in various areas of the mill. Dependent upon the area and maintenance needs, there will be work in confined spaces, elevated heights, and in close proximity to molten metal, high voltage and high-pressure systems.

Requirements:
- Associates or Two-Year Technical Degree in PLC, Industrial Electrical, Electromechanical, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or similar field.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on work experience in industrial electrical, instrumentation and controls.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate and relay information between various departments.
- High level of electrical aptitude and team orientation (Candidates will be assessed as part of the hiring process).
- Experience in troubleshooting AC and DC drives, PLC’s, motor control circuits and AC crane controls.
- PLC to I/O to field device troubleshooting experience is required.
- Rotating 12-hour shift work, which will include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
- Overtime work as needed to support production schedule.
- Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines at all times. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and when necessary, respirator equipment.
- Punctuality, consistent attendance and self-direction for the success of the operations.
- Must be able to read and understand equipment diagrams and electrical schematics. Ability to read hydraulic and pneumatic blueprints is preferred.
- Experience in Meltshop and/or Caster Maintenance is preferred.
- Familiarity and certifications in Safety functions including but not limited to Confined Space, Lockout Tagout, Fall Protection, Rigging and Mobile Equipment is preferred. Training and certification opportunities will be available over course of employment.
Physical Demands (Bona-fide Occupational Qualifications):
- · Requires ability to perform manual labor and lift in weights excess of 50 - 100 lbs.
· Requires mental dexterity to perform job in high pressure and time sensitive situations.
· Requires use and dexterity of all limbs to perform multiple tasks at once.
· Requires considerable physical mobility to traverse the plant. This includes stairs, different terrains, uneven surfaces and ladders, while carrying equipment and supplies.
· Requires physical work while standing, sitting, crouching, lifting overhead, lying down, and crawling under equipment.
· Requires ability to work in harsh environments that are hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.
· Requires ability to comply with drug free and alcohol-free work environment. This includes illicit drugs and prescribed drugs that can affect or alter mental and physical capabilities.
· Requires passing of pre-employment post-offer drug screen and physical.
