POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE.
The automation technician will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting automated systems, ensuring their proper operation and availability. The automation technician will participate in process improvements involving modifications to automation devices and support the automation integration of the existing machines with the new machines as part of CAPEX projects.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate and uphold Riverside Natural Food’s Core Values.
- Understand and lead compliance with both Health and Safety and Food Safety practices.
- Attending breakdown call. Independently troubleshoot and resolve both mechanical and electrical
- Monitoring, troubleshooting, and programming Allen-Bradley and SIEMENS PLC’s. Responsible for implementing and executing a solid system for the backup of all programs and associated parameters with the most secure and effective way to store them.
- Troubleshooting and programming Allen-Bradley and SIEMENS HMI’s. Responsible for implementing and executing a solid system for the backup of all HMI programs with the most secure and effective way to store them.
- Troubleshooting, monitoring, and programming different VFD’s and Motion Control technologies.
- Responsible for troubleshooting communications issues in control networks, including Ethernet TCP/IP, MODBUS TCP/IP, OPC UA. Backup managed switches configurations.
- Responsible for Change Management by documenting all modifications and updates on all automation-related programs, parameters, and devices. Including updates to electrical drawings, functional descriptions, P&ID documentation, and control network diagrams.
- Responsible for troubleshooting, installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical and electronic equipment, instrumentation, automation devices, as well as computerized control systems. This includes HMI (Human-Machine Interface), PCs, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and network devices.
- Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on complicated and/or recurring automation failure modes. This will include reaching out to a 3rd party, performing risk analysis, evaluating potential causes, and assessing data.
- Responsible for setting up and implementing a calibration process for entire instrumentation and automation devices and their control components.
- Support the implementation of the different Ignition SCADA initiatives focused on collecting, historizing and reporting data to support the decision-making process. Assist in the implementation of Ignition Supervisory Control for the different equipment.
- Support the proper operation of RedZone MES system, including adding new features or capabilities for existing or new machines.
- Support the integration of the new machines to existing control networks and integration with upstream/downstream equipment. Participate in the IO testing and commissioning of new machines focusing in the Automation side.
- Escalate recurring problems to the supervisor and work on eliminating them.
- Perform minor repairs, equipment set up, change over, overhaul, fabrication as needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance on manufacturing equipment including food mixer, slab forming machine, horizontal wrapper, robotic pick and place system, case packer, tunnel oven, conveyors, etc.
- Provide technical assistant / advice in Preventive Maintenance optimization effort.
- Assist outside contractors and ensure GMP policies are being adhered to.
- Performs work in accordance with established maintenance processes and practices including but not limited to recording work done, recording data for analysis, logging spare parts consumed, cleaning up work area, etc.
- Participate in cross functional continuous improvement initiative.
- Responsible for the highest standards of housekeeping & safety in all aspects of the job.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION
- Completion of degree in Control/Automation Engineering Technician.
- Minimum 4 years of experience of direct control automation experience.
- Possess in-depth knowledge and experience with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Motion Control Systems. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot industrial automation devices efficiently and effectively.
- Knowledge and experience working with Allen-Bradley and Siemens software, including Studio 500, FT View ME, Connected Components Workbench Developer, TIA Portal.
- Knowledge and experience working with Ignition SCADA is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills including troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills to effectively lead teams to quickly identify issues, causes, and sustainable corrective action.
- Capable of following technical direction while also demonstrating the ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environments. Possess strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a results-oriented and highly organized approach.
- Proficiency in reading, analyzing, and interpreting electrical drawings, P&ID drawings, and control network drawings.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Strong Automation, mechanical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 5 years of experience as Millwright Mechanic, Maintenance technician or Electrician
- Certified NOC 7311 or “Red Seal” Millwright Mechanics or Provincial Electricians Ticket (442A or 309D) preferred or working toward one
- Working experience with equipment such as vertical wrappers, horizontal wrappers, robotics pick and place, tunnel oven is an asset
- Ability to read technical drawings and electrical schematics
- Hands-on working experience with the following is preferred
- Power transmission systems
- Electric and electronic controls
- Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Welding, brazing, and soldering
- Servo and electric motors
- lubrication types and systems
- Proven machining skills using lathes, milling, and drill press
- Rigging and hoisting experience is an asset
- Flexibility to work afternoons and weekends
