JOB DESCRIPTION

As a vital member of the Transportation and Traffic Management team, this role insures the university’s diverse fleet and equipment remain in top condition. This position is responsible for performing comprehensive preventative maintenance, routine repairs, and emergency breakdown services on a wide range of assets, including:

  • Class 1 through Class 8 vehicles
  • Transit buses
  • Road coaches
  • Shuttle buses
  • Grounds maintenance equipment
  • Heavy equipment

Responsible for diagnosing and repairing major systems such as engines, transmissions, air conditioning, air brakes, electrical systems (including multiplex), suspension (including air suspension), exhaust, emission, steering, engine cooling, and charging/starting systems.
Success in this role requires expertise with modern diagnostic equipment, including OEM software (Cummins, Ford, General Motors, John Deere), automotive scan tools, oscilloscopes, and multi-meters. Use of oxy-acetylene equipment, plasma cutters, MIG welders, and various metal working tools for metal fabrication and repairs.
This role may involve attending meetings and training and working weekends and special events.
Requires completion of successful background check; in accordance with the Disaster Preparedness and University State of Emergency Policy 6.17, this position has been designated as an essential position.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

300 hours training (or 3 months experience) in auto mechanics, or equivalent.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated expertise in hydraulic systems, encompassing controls, component troubleshooting, and precise hydraulic hose assembly.
  • Advanced diagnostic capabilities, including the ability to meticulously analyze and interpret data from OEM diagnostic software (Ford, GM, or Cummins) to resolve issues beyond simple fault codes.
  • Comprehensive experience with modern diesel engine technologies, including the maintenance and repair of complex exhaust after-treatment systems.
  • Strong aptitude for reading and accurately interpreting intricate wiring diagrams.
  • Proven hands-on experience in the diagnosis and repair of air brake systems, air suspension systems, and pneumatic controls.
  • Current and valid HVAC certification, coupled with practical experience in maintaining and repairing HVAC systems.
  • In-depth electrical troubleshooting skills, with a solid theoretical and practical understanding of electrical resistance and voltage drop principles.
  • Class B CDL with passenger endorsement.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive diagnostic proficiency (5+ years), evidenced by the ability to expertly interpret complex data beyond simple fault codes using OEM diagnostic software from Ford, GM, or Cummins.
  • Significant experience (3+ years) in modern diesel engine technologies, specifically including the repair and maintenance of advanced exhaust after-treatment systems.
  • Proven expertise (3+ years) in diagnosing and repairing air brake systems.
  • An Automotive ASE Master Certification.
  • Valuable experience with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered engines.
  • A strong background in the maintenance and repair of diverse grounds, non-road, and heavy equipment.
  • Experience using a fleet management system to document work
    Position has a hiring range of $25.35-$31.69 per hour.
