Description
Career Area: Engineering Job Description: Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc. When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it. Job Description: The Underground Site System Engineering Lead contributes to the definition, integration, and validation of end to end site technology capabilities for underground operations. The role enables scalable, reusable site system solutions by applying systems engineering practices and a common representation of site solutions that can be leveraged across industries (e.g., mining, quarry & aggregates, construction). This role interfaces with machine and office product teams and works closely with delivery-team architects to ensure integrated solutions align to established system patterns, interfaces, and engineering standards. The Underground Site System Engineering Lead supports New Product Introduction (NPI) programs by defining solution requirements, ensuring the solution architecture is validated against those requirements, and reporting progress toward NPI deliverables to the Site Systems Program Lead. What You Will Do: Define and maintain end to end underground site solution requirements, interfaces, and constraints, using a common representation that supports reuse across industries and products. Interface with machine teams (onboard/embedded) and office software teams to deliver integrated underground solutions, ensuring consistent system behaviors and data flows end to end. Partner with architects from delivery teams to shape solution architecture, define interface contracts, and ensure alignment with enterprise system patterns and architectural guidance. Lead architecture validation activities within NPI programs, including requirements traceability, verification planning, technical reviews, and evidence collection for NPI gates/deliverables. Develop and maintain key systems engineering artifacts for underground site solutions (requirements, interface definitions, operational scenarios, assumptions/constraints, and validation plans) and ensure they remain current as products evolve. Drive cross team integration planning (dependencies, sequencing, and integration test strategy) and support resolution of cross product issues impacting underground site solution performance. Lead and participate in technical reviews and architectural governance forums, protecting long term solution integrity and ensuring underground needs are represented in enterprise decisions. Report regularly to the Site Systems Tech Lead/Program Manager on progress, risks, and mitigations toward NPI deliverables, escalating gaps and driving closure with accountable teams. What You Have: Systems Engineering Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading system requirements definition and management across complex, multi team product environments. Proven ability to define end to end solution architecture and interfaces, drive integration strategies, and influence technical direction beyond a single team or product. Underground Domain Knowledge: Applied experience with underground operations and constraints (safety, connectivity limitations, operational workflows, and environmental conditions). Ability to translate underground use cases into scalable site solution definitions that can be reused across industries. Problem Solving & Integration: Extensive experience recognizing, anticipating, and resolving complex cross team integration problems. Ability to apply engineering judgment with incomplete data, competing priorities, and long term consequences, while driving alignment on interfaces and validation approach. Architecture & Engineering Tooling: Hands on experience with systems engineering and architecture practices/tools used to define and validate complex solutions (e.g., requirements management, interface control, modeling, and validation evidence). Ability to select and apply appropriate tools based on problem context rather than tool familiarity alone. Consideration for Top Candidates: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent relevant experience). Proven experience leading systems engineering activities on software/hardware product development programs, including requirements, interfaces, and end to end integration. Experience partnering with solution/product architects and contributing to architecture governance and design review forums. Experience delivering underground site technology solutions (or closely related domains) preferred. Experience with NPI programs, including architecture validation, requirements traceability, verification planning, and gate/deliverable execution. Experience working across machine (onboard/embedded) and office software teams, including defining shared data models and interface contracts.
