AVSS is an aerospace company and is the world leader in parachute recovery systems for commercial drones and delivery systems for when landing is not an option.
With rapid growth in the delivery system product lines and recent nationwide approval to conduct avalanche blasting with drones, AVSS is looking to add an Avalanche Specialist to the team. This role will start on a contract from now until December 15th, 2025. Afterwards, the intent is to offer a full-time position.
As this position is based in Ottawa, applicants currently living outside of the National Capital Region (Ottawa) will be provided with company-paid accommodations from now until December 15th.
The company is looking for an individual who has more than 2 years of relevant experience as either (1) an avalanche technician, either working for a ski hill, mining site, or government operation or (2) former military role in handling explosives and dangerous goods for similar blasting activities.
This role is a perfect fit for an individual who enjoys the science behind avalanche blasting and interested in learning about the use of drones.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Need to have:

  • Blaster’s Certificate (flexible on which province/country)
  • Excellent English communications (written and verbal) to communicate effectively with peers and stakeholders across the organization
  • Choice ownership
  • A passion for learning

Nice to have:

  • Aviation/drone experience
  • Avalanche forecasting experience
  • InfoEx experience
  • CAA Avalanche Professional designation

Flexible language requirement:

  • French not required

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
  • Travel to BC/Western Canada for up to 10 days

Responsibilities
  • Plan and conduct explosive avalanche control missions in collaboration with the drone team
  • Conduct avalanche risk assessments, avalanche mapping, and write clear, technically sound reports
  • Building and reviewing technical specifications for operations and testing
  • Assisting team members with testing and meeting specifications
  • Caring about the product and working to make it better through user experience research and mocking up new features
  • Working closely with the engineering development team to review requirements and define estimates and plans
  • Ensuring the development process is constantly improving as the company scales
  • Making sure all technical aspects are transparent to the rest of the company
