This opportunity is open to trainee pharmacists due to qualifying in 2024 or registered pharmacists with the GPhC. Those seeking a new challenge, looking to explore a new sector, or to relocate to South West London are encouraged to apply.
As a rotational pharmacist, you’ll work across several different rotations:
Elderly Care
Stroke
Surgery
Specialist Medicine (Respiratory, Gastro, Cardiology, Renal, Endocrine)
Acute medicine (AMU, ED)
Medicines information
Technical services/aseptics
Paediatrics and Maternity
GP/ICN rotation
Each rotation has been designed to develop your clinical and personal skills to help prepare you for your next role as a specialist clinical pharmacist.
A typical day as a Band 6 Pharmacist includes a full range of clinical and operational tasks, from completing drug histories and medicines reconciliations to counselling and processing discharge prescriptions on the wards. You will be given the autonomy to balance your time between these tasks and other responsibilities, such as working objectives and project work (audits etc). The majority of your day will be spent on clinical commitments, as our dispensary is technician led. You will be provided with a strong and structured support system to focus your learning and development within each rotation.
Working closely with a large multidisciplinary team (consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, discharge team members, etc.), you will provide safe and effective patient care through ward rounds, huddles, and MDT meetings. You will also have opportunities to develop leadership skills, and interpersonal skills (e.g. providing feedback, appraisal techniques, professionalism, assertiveness, communication etc.) through teaching tutorials for trainee pharmacists, nurses, and medical students. You will also be involved in the education and training of undergraduate pharmacy students as well as medical students.
You will be part of a rotating role that involves both on-site and cross-sector work, including providing pharmacy services to local GP practices and virtual wards within the Integrated Care Network team.
Within the department, we foster a rich learning culture, prioritising the development of well-rounded pharmacists. We invest in clinical training through educational weekly clinical pharmacy teaching sessions, ensuring our pharmacists are equipped with the latest knowledge and expertise.
Additionally, as a Band 6 pharmacist, you’ll embark on a structured progression journey, with the option to remain rotational or specialise as a Band 7. We’ll provide you with a fully funded diploma to enhance your knowledge and capabilities. Additionally, we’re creating new opportunities for pharmacists to develop and implement their independent prescribing qualification to practice in clinics. Specialist roles in areas such as infectious diseases, medicines information, high-cost drugs, aseptics, education and training, and informatics are also available.
Beyond clinical training, we also provide our pharmacists with diverse opportunities to engage in non-clinical development activities that support their professional growth and progression. These opportunities include participating in audits, service evaluations, change management projects, RCA investigations, new drug applications and drug recalls, financial reports, and guideline writing.
These experiences will not only enhance your pharmaceutical knowledge but also equip you with the skills required to excel in leadership and management roles.
