The post holder will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team and will be accountable for the provision of a high standard of holistic care and casting procedures.

  • They will act as professional role model at all times and will carry out care in accordance with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures and the BOA/BCC Casting Standards.
  • The post holder must be flexible in their approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any specified area within the Trust, within their level of competence.

  • Ensure the highest standard of cast/splint application and adjustment, in line with best practice guidance.
  • Ensure the highest standard of removal of plaster casts/splints, In line with best practice guidance.
  • Demonstrate a holistic approach to patient care and involve patients in decisions, acting as the patient’s advocate.
  • To assess patients’ needs with reference to their clinical condition and social needs, bringing issues to the attention of the clinician requesting treatment, and suggesting alternatives where appropriate.
  • Educate patients regarding their care, issuing verbal and written documentation. Assist with potential problems associated with casting/splints and instigate measures to minimize/eliminate the risks identified.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of care given in medical notes or on plaster form, including skin condition.
  • Answer and respond to staff and patient inquiries, including community queries.
  • Documenting /recording telephone advice for patients seeking cast care follow-up.
  • Assist clinicians in the manipulation of fractures and perform removal of K wires in the plaster room, after appropriate training is given.
  • Administer & record Entonox on completion of competency per trust guidelines under the supervision of a consultant or NMC trained nurse.
  • To provide walking aids, measure and teach their correct use.
  • Assist in theatres with the application of specialist casts following surgery.

  • The post holder needs to be professionally accountable and work according to the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners (AOP) and adhere to the Casting Standards set by the British Orthopaedic Association, casting committee.
  • They must hold a current British Casting Certificate (BCC) and show evidence of continued practice development, maintain a professional profile and personal development plan. Show evidence of registration on the British Casting register.
  • The post holder will have a minimum of appropriate experience as a qualified British Casting Certificate holder.
  • The post holder will be required to work independently and support registered nurses and allied health care professionals in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care of all trauma & orthopaedic conditions including the application of all casts and braces without direct supervision.
  • To work independently and support registered nurses and allied health care professionals in the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation of care and treatment of wounds, and removal of sutures and clips without direct supervision.
  • The post holder will provide technical and professional support in the removal and application of casts and splints for Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinics, Emergency Department, Theatre, and Wards, and work alongside multidisciplinary teams such as Podiatrists, Physiotherapists, and professionals allied to medicine.
  • The post holder will be required to work autonomously and as part of a team overseeing the day-to-day running of the plaster room.
  • The post holder will be required to supervise educational and training support to trainee and plaster room support workers.
  • Knowledge of IT applications & functions
